Freepers are in drag (..."couch commandos")
Edited on Fri May-27-05 10:52 AM by scottxyz
But they're in BUTCH drag.

Freepers are a buncha wannabe Jeff Gannons, a pathological echo-chamber of closet wimps who have figured out how to turn each other on by trying to sound tough on-line.

This is the only conclusion I can draw from this thread, where LESS THAN A DOZEN Freepers checked in to confirm they served their country (versus hundreds of DUers):

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3734985&mesg_id=3734985

THIS is a big reason Freepers like George Flightsuit Bush. They relate to his phoniness - they copy it - they think it sells. Yeah, it does - for a while, to other losers.

(Edited headline to include "couch commandos" from Spazito's comment downthread.)

1. It's not less than a dozen.
It has 142 responses right now. It had 16 when the thread was started.

I think these sorts of "we have more vets than you, nanananan" pissing matches are totally juvenile.

I think they freak out when they know there are a lot of veterans who vote for Democrats. It makes their head explode. So I like our thread here not only because it honors vets (Memorial Day) but because anything that makes their little heads explode is ok by me.

6. I can sympathize with that sentiment.
except for one component -- their assertions that to be patriotic (and being a vet is, conventionally, the pinnacle of patriotism) subsumes being a conservative, are so absurd and so off-the-wall that to address those claims is to give them credit they don't come close to deserving.

21. And I can agree with THAT sentiment.
I've never spent a day in the military, but I love my country (NOT the government) as much as the next person.

3. Count again
Many of the responses are "bumps" and "thank you". Go through the thread and count the actual number of vets. Then go to the DU thread, which is now >300, with I'd guess 90% vets checking in.

No. I just find it more interesting to post when there's something I disagree with, rather than to just spam the board with "ditto" or "I agree". :) (which is 90% of the time)

14. OK well
out of around 60 posts I've made in the last 48 hours, only around 10-15 are disagreeable -- and most of those are about one topic: whether or not neocons are stupid. Another 10 are disagreeing with one poster to support a point another was making, and the rest aren't contradicting anything at all.

Why, does it bother you?

18. Posts stating a contrarian position seem to bother a lot of people
Like you, I find the exchanges more stimulating when I'm arguing a POV that doesn't mesh with the CW of the thread (had a ball yesterday on a race-related thread, from a couple thought-provoking exchanges to the point of being called a Republican) OR exchanging ideas with someone whose views clash with mine. In my experience, those are often the most educational - and beneficial - discussions.

(this is just a general observation and understand that I'm NOT referring to Stephanie's comments above - I have no reason to believe from the posts of hers that I've read, that she fits this description) Some folks, here and elsewhere, don't appreciate having the groupthink challenged, though. To me, that's kinda sad.

couple months, and I haven't had time to update it (so what am I doing here, right?) but haven't decided whether to keep it or kill it... or whether to zap it from my sig.

7. I don't think it matters how many write they are vets either
Edited on Fri May-27-05 10:42 AM by uppityperson
Of course you are welcome to your opinion, but I think it matters what they are doing now. I realize that the comparison can be made as to how many vets are conservative and how many liberal, or repub/democrat, but all these check ins show is how many people post they are vets. The check ins are good to help encourage and support each other, but as far as comparing #s it means nothing.

Edited to add: I don't see myself as contrarian either, just uppity at times. }(

31. It does mean something. The first time you mark time waiting for dad
to reply, well that may mean nothing to some. But on the third term, you begin to realize, War is Hell.

It is so easy to be the Chuck Norris-Bruce Lee-Jet Li type in the movies, but waiting at home, praying, you start looking for another solution.

32. Being a vet does matter, definetely. Yes it does. Way.
Having a parent, or sibling, or child, or friend, or yourself be a vet does matter. Very much. I mean comparing numbers as to who CLAIMS they are a vet does not matter. Any of us can claim we are anything online and comparing claim numbers means nothing. Very definitely having a person in your life who is a vet, or being a vet, or currently in the military, means a lot. An awful lot. What you do, who you are matters. Not who or what you claim online and not to compare with what others claim. Does this make sense? Peace and hope your dad and you and all else are ok.
