Dobson's warm and fuzzy homily for today...
Edited on Fri May-27-05 07:59 AM by BiggJawn
Mad-Dog Dobson has a daily segment on my local station. does he rail against the Liberals, Wiccans, Heathens and Homos that are destroying our country by scaring Jeebus away?

No, he saves that talk for The Faithful. This is "recruiting", so it's warm and fuzzy time...

So today find our kindly Man of GAWD at the grocery store (S'Yeah, I *BET* he does the shopping!) Behind an elderly, confused woman who seems to have more groceries than she has money (not unusual in Bush's Amerika)and is getting fretful.

So Our Hero leans over to the checker and says "Just take what she has and put the rest on MY bill". So Dobson winds up paying about $8 of the old woman's bill, and notiuces that the checker is starting to cry.

"Whats wrong?"
"In 20 years of checking, I've NEVER seen anyone do that"

Our Hero ends up by saying he wishes he had paid ALL the old woman's bill...

Wonder if he would have felt the same way if she had been a Lesbian, or was buying stuff for a Sabbat feast?

Disgusting two-faced bastard. It's calculated. "Why are these people saying bad things about Pastor Dobson? He buys groceries for old people?"

I can't say anything about Jimmy after THAT! It'd be like publicly stomping puppies....

Can't win with these tactics....

2. I wish people like Dobson wouldn't use stories like that. There seems to
be an underlying belief that says "only people who have Jesus in their lives would do this," or "it is because I have Jesus that I am able to do this; it couldn't possibly come from the heart of anyone who doesn't have Jesus."

7. It's called spiritual pride
Jesus said to do your alms in secret. This is typical Pharisee behavior.

I am always amazed at how quick people are to say how proud they are. Lee Greenwood comes to mind: "I'm PROUD to Be An American."

Pride is one of the worst sins, in the Judeo-Christian belief system which allegedly dominates our culture, one can have. This is pointed out repeatedly throughout both Old and New Testaments.

12. Hear, hear.
I'm guilty too at times. (After all, it's hard to give money to a homeless woman secretly.)

3. For the tens of thousands he's skimming from his flock ...
offering to help pay for an old woman's groceries is like us throwing 2 cents into the Take-A-Penny-Leave-A-Penny tray and believing we're pious for doing it.

5. That checker exists only in Dobson's mind.
Rich people don't buy their own groceries. Remember how Poppy was amazed the first time he saw a checkout scanner?

8. For every dollar he's spent feeding the elderly
he's probably encouraged a child and a homosexual to be beaten. One doesn't cancel out the other in my book.

9. There's something very wrong with a man who
goes on the radio to tell about his good deeds.

"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrits do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have their received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Matthew 6:1-4

The words of Jesus.

10. And his faithful sheep...
will actually believe that story. The man is sickening with his phony piety and bullshit stories. I doubt he's ever down a good deed in his life. He talks a hell of a good game though.

How anyone can be so naive and ignorant to follow this man is a complete mystery to me. I guess many have just stopped their critical thinking system cold. It's so much easier to BELIEVE than think! :eyes:

11. Dobson Story: 1992
I was working with a radio program that was syndicating daily health reports to radio stations. The syndication market is tough as getting our show on a big station in a drive time can mean lots of listeners and money. It's also a tough sell as you're asking for one or two minutes that can be used to sell local commercials. It took a lot of cajoling and contacts to get a show placed...especially on the larger stations.

We would run up against some popular features...Paul Harvey, for example...that were long-established staples and many stations had dozens of other program options. Around '92, we started seeing that stations were starting to take Dobson's daily disertation....Focus On The Family. I didn't know much about Dobson at the time, but soon found out.

I was alarmed at the time that so many people I talked to...and this was 1992...didn't realize that this man wasn't a doctor, but a preacher. He wasn't an expert in family matters as a psychologist or child development expert would be, but a fundie dressed as s kindly "uncle" with all sorts of advice. It was amazing how many Program and News Directors cleared this show without ever bothering to audition or listen to it. A good number told me they were directed to take the show by either their bosses or someone in the sales department who said that time had been paid for.

Dobson, and his organization, are sharp cookies...or they were. We found out that many station were indeed paid for carrying the program...or that it was sponsored by a local business that paid premium rates for the time as well. This assured Dobson got on and at the times he wanted.

The real underground that no one talks about are the thousands of religious stations that Dobson and other fundies use...below the radar...to reach their base and keep them constantly energized.

15. tell-tale signs he doesn't have a clue about true Christian giving.
First of all he talks about his own generosity. True givers don't do that. You might hear that someone has given to the needy, but never from the person who has given from his or her heart.
Then he says he wished he had paid the entire bill? This makes it obvious that giving is something that is entirely new to him.
He surely thinks he will be mightly blessed by God for his "generosity", while at the same time calculating that he'll receive many more donations above and beyond the $8 this lady set him back.
If the truth were known she probably gives more than Dobson. Jesus said the rich give out of their abundance, but the poor give all that they have many times.
When he reads the Bible he needs to skip over to the New Testament once in a while, read the Sermon of the Mount, ICor. 13, things like that.

18. Oh please. I've done that, but it was only about $1.50
the lady in front of me was going crazy with 3 kids and was a tiny bit short. I pulled a couple of bucks out of my pocket. She didn't need to deal with that. This is not an act of sainthood.

I've seen other people do it too. I'd be suprised if someone who was a checker for 20 years had never seen it.

21. Dobson
Honestly, I can't stand that man. A few days ago I got a mass mailing from his group (how in the names of Isis they got my name and address I'll never know) railing about the evils of homosexuality and such and asking for money. It was deposited in the appropriate location - the garbage. But, Dobson is not a minister, preacher or cleric of any kind. He does have a PhD in psychology which he used parley his way to the front of the right-wing religious pack by publishing books saying that good Christian parents should spank their kids (there was a thread on DU not too long ago about one of his articles on obedience in which he proudly told how he beat the family's dachshund into submission - wow, how manly can you get?) - but he is not a minister and should not be given that honorific title. Dobson loves to make a big deal about how he isn't a cleric and is, I think he calls it "under discipleship", to the pastor of his church in Colorado Springs.
