Worsening the Patriot Act - a frightening article, a must read

Secrecy is the enemy of liberty. Why, then, is the Senate Select Committee on Intelli gence meeting in secret today to finish the details of its Patriot Act rewrite?

Officially, it is to hear classified information about how the Patriot Act has been used. But such a session - and the entire direction of the Intelligence Committee's efforts to expand unchecked the secret activities of federal investigators - should raise serious concerns among those who believe such broadened powers demand strict judicial oversight.

The committee, at the behest of the White House, not only seeks to make permanent the Patriot Act's most onerous features, but plans as well to give federal authorities yet more unquestioned access to the private medical, financial and transactional records of Americans without so much as a by-your-leave from any court.

1. Hey, Steve. Who's on the
Senate Select Committee (on intelligence?)? Do you know, or how can we find out? I googled it and got old articles, which is puzzling and suspect.

4. Now I'm really puzzled; I hope our Dem
contingent is responding appropriately. :scared: If we don't really know what they're talking about, how can we gage it?
I asked originally because of the Bolton success today-how could they be anywhere else, but I realize these people float around.
It's been an interesting week!

6. Good question. We're supposed to trust them to handle
sensitive information appropriately, but I don't. Get new people on the committee maybe ???

5. Roberts
The creature from Kansas is driving much of the more onerous aspects. Like the granting full gestapo power to the FBI , they will be able to make their own warrants and do their secret roundups without judiciary oversite.

Political adversaries could be rounded up this way, with the public none the wiser.

Frightening indeed and quite treasonous.

7. REPEAL The P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Acts
I can't say it enough. It is a modified version of Hitler's Enabling Act, under the guise of "security" and "protection from terrorists", when it turned out Hitler was the worst terrorist of them all.
Recommending this thread.
