CNN reporting that White House is stunned
I'm loving it today... they want bolton ASAP. IMO, that's gonna put a damper on their plan to attack Iran.

33. So how do they think Bush got in?
I don't see how Bolton can really do any harm. Whoever gets in will just follow white house policies anyway. Bolton has the "virtue" of being a visible embarrassment. He could facilitate whatever opposition there is to Bush at home. A Colin Powell there does us, the opposition, no good.

Why should we offer Bush camoflauge? Bolton's what he wants, and that's what he should have (for now.)

Your "reverse psychology" would result in more terrorism and an even smaller role for the UN than it already has.

No chance. Bolton gotta go.

43. Maybe, but I don't think so.
While I originally suggested that Bush should have Bolton to be snarky, (I'm not sure if that's how to use that word) the more I think about it the more I come up with :wtf:

Are there potential terrorists waiting for the Bolton appointment to go into action?

The UN might do better to write off the Bush administration.

I think we're looking at a chaotic system here, and Bolton is a "strange attractor."

Bolton is surely the worst choice for this position, and that is bad for Bush. Who would you suggest that would make any difference? Who is so bereft of self-respect that they would take this job?

It's Bush that's gotta go. His choice of henchmen is largely irrelevant. Anyone you might approve would have no power in this administration.

50. I'm with you, IMM. The crappier the nominee, the better for us.
That asshole Bolton reflects exactly the nastiness of his Pretzeldent, and he would be perfect in the job. He also serves at the pleasure of the President, and a Dem prez would throw his ass out in the street ASAP. What WE have to worry about is Bush appointing extreme RW judges to state and federal LIFETIME positions.

We can get rid of Bolton; we can't get rid of judges.

the UN can't "write off" the Bush administration. First of all, there's this 39-story building in Turtle Bay where it lives, breathes, and works...

Second--although the UN may not have much significance here, it has a huge significance in other parts of the world. You want a putz like Bolton representing us to the world through the only truly international government agency?

America's foreign policy problems can't mend until America is back in the fold of the UN. The UN Charter is a beautiful document. Read it, if you haven't. Appointing Bolton will make that impossible for the near term. Virtually anyone would be a better choice...Colin Powell? Richard Clarke? Hell, I'd rather see James Baker in there. The list is endless.

67. Clarke or Powell wouldn't do it. They have some decency.
You're right, anybody would be better than Bolton. But they would want to do a good job. They would be frustrated and marginalized. Bush wants Bolton because he sucks, because he projects Bush's desires. Bush hates the UN. Nominating Bolton is proof of that. Even Baker has a reputation to consider.

I opposed Bolton. But the more I thought about it, the more it seemed fruitless to do it. Why do you think that Bush is purging the State Department and packing it with Neocon political hacks? Bolton will at least put an honest face on the Bush regime. It might help him get impeached, a very long shot.

86. I think the reason for sending
Bolton to the UN is that it will ensure that a diplomatic solution over Iran will not be found. Bolton has the rare quality of antagonizing anybody he meets.

And, he's in on all their devious plans, which a moderate might object to if he knew of them.

destroy the UN, neuter it, and put it in a kennel. And that's why they want him. They'll accept nothing less than its total detruction. That's what this is all about. Oh, and more wars.

99. PNAC and the neo-cons want us OUT of the UN! It's obvious that's why
they want Bolton in there. He'll piss everyone else off, and then cry that the UN is not cooperating and is against America. Then, Bush can start a populist movement to withdraw from the UN.

Then the UN can't hold us back as we advance American Imperialism, saying nasty things like "illegal wars" and such.

21. Well, right up until a couple of minutes ago
MSN was reporting that the Bolton confirmation was expected by an easy margin. Why wouldn't the White House think they were once again on the path to another easy victory?

Watch for the spin: The White House never really wanted Bolton, this isn't a setback, Bolton will eventually be confirmed, why won't the Democrats give him an up-or-down vote, blah-de-blah.

Don't believe any of it. The Democrats hung tough and whipped their asses. Bolton's nomination would be withdrawn under ordinary circumstances. The Bushistas will continue to try to ram him through, these not being ordinary times.

(except for Landrieu, Pryor, and Ben Nelson.

The Republicans ranks didn't break. Even Voinovich voted to end cloture.

What's amazing is the Democrats held together by just enough votes to defeat cloture. This could be the start of something big.

Another question is: Is now too late?

53. Karl Rove is like Paris Hilton
Nothing more than a media phenomenon. Brain cells didn't make Karl Rove - an American tragedy made Karl Rove. His Bolton fast-track loss is only one more link in a chain of failures for this flop.

must be part of this. This administration's secretiveness even tries to exclude the senate. They've gotten away with it and I hope this time they can't.

60. Even IF Bolton eventually gets confirmed he is now so compromised
he will be a non-entity at the UN. He is the laughing stock, goofy poster boy for Chimpy. He has no credibility with anyone except the repug slugs in the Senate and they won't being going to work with him every day in New York. He will have as much clout to reform the UN as a wet tissue paper. The other members of the UN will just put him on their ignore list and he will be powerless.

He can veto lots of stuff but when the day is done, he just represents one idiot with one vote - the rest of the Security Council will have him for lunch.

I'm glad he didn't make it through today and certainly hope his nomination is thrown out but IF he does make it through it will be an English farce with Bolton playing the starring role. Reform, my ass. He'll be lucky if he can get the UN to validate his parking.

Bolton is the face of the Bush Administration. He will be the bell on the cat's tail. He can't be any worse than whomever else Bush sends, but he will be obvious!

If the sex stuff didn't hurt him, what are they hiding? The mind reels...

Again, my point is that our UN policy is so bad, no decent person would take that job under Bush.

89. That's the whole point
They're not going to "reform the UN". That's just a lame excuse for sending that lunatic and not someone qualified. Bolton's mission will be to ensure that a diplomatic solution over Iran will not be found. A moderate might object to that assignment.

101. I have that feeling too.
I think that's what the "rumors" that Voinovich referred to are all about. I think that everyone in D.C. knows what these rumors are, and they're so outrageous that no one will speak them aloud, but they're true. V's emotion and tears show that something is terribly, terribly amiss here.

At this point, any other previous administration would cut their losses and withdraw the nomination, but Bolton is their giant "Fuck you!" to the whole world and they're sticking with it, believing they can get away with anything (possibly even including, well, use your imagination). This plus the nuclear option were their plan to completely consolidate power this week.

I suspect that the documents the Dems are demanding are damning enough to scuttle him but are not about the rumors. I've become cynical enough now that I even suspect that the whole demand for those documents issue is just a way for the Dem appeasers to give them a way out without ever coming to grips with the real issue of the "rumors."

But, like you, I think that something will break soon. Someone will break or someone will accidentally let something slip. V's reference to the rumors was probably a slip.

70. We shouldn't go to the mat over Bolton
Nothing constructive for the US is going to happen while Bush is in power. It doesn't matter what Fisthead they stick in there. Sure it will make the us look bad, but not as bad as all the other shit Bushco has done. Hold his nomination till they squeeze out some more damaging documents then let him go. He'll get his up or down vote. If he is confirmed, Bushco will look bad for appointing a a neocaon freak with anger issues. If he loses, then Bushco looks weak because they can't force through their nominations when they control the Senate. It's a beautiful win/win here. Reid and Boxer are playing this one perfectly.

77. This is all about the senate powers as a co-equal branch of govt
The dems started hilighting that viewpoint during the near-nuking and it's just as applicable in this circumstance. Some of the right wingnut senators seem to have forgotten that they're supposed to be independent of the executive branch.
