"The plan announced Rumsfeld would close 33 major bases and downsize 29 others, saving an estimated $48 billion over 20 years"
Ok I am all for rightsizing the military. But this works out to $2.4B a year. If you figure that each base will save the same amount and each downsize is equal to half a base closure, then that works out to $50M per base per year. and a little over $4M a month.
First of alll I ain't impressed....But if Governors really want to keep the base open and save those jobs a $50M yearly payment to federal coffers would do the trick.
The savings is pretty negligble for all the disruption it would cause.
I agree I work on a military base as a civilian and nobody seems to have an answer to that same question when I proposed it. I don't know how much money they saved with the previous go round 10 years ago (at least as a percentage of total budget) but this appears pretty pitiful and will have a big impact in some areas (Mass. Maine) I do know that this has been in the works for several years so its not something Rumsfelt initiated and it was much smaller (10% of bases closed rather than 25%)
