This is why this place (DU) is so damn good
Edited on Wed May-25-05 04:36 PM by DancingBear
We've been battling for 2 days now over The Compromise. I think it stinks. Many agree. Others think it was the right thing to do. Many agree.

Each side lays out cogent arguments to back their positions. Some argue with passion, others with reserve. Some ask to look at history, some ask to look at politics.

I do not trust a Republican promise as far as I can throw one, but others argue that efforts to thwart the promise will be swift and sure.

The sides are convincing, the give and take well reasoned, heartfelt, and honest. And because of it, I learn. Each time I lay out a premise, cocksure that I have the got'cha, I am reminded of the brilliance that is this place, as someone takes me to task, forcing me to think along new lines or re-enforce old ones.

I honestly can't think of a better place to play political baseball.

Take a bow, ya bastards. You deserve it.

19. That's what I'm thinking too--how can Owens and Brown on the federal
bench be good?

The Democrats claim they got concessions . . . gee, that's great. But Bush gets his wack-o neo-con judges, and we get promises.

The Dems should have never backed down on these judges. They have to show how they're different than Republicans, not how they can make deals.

Sorry, it looks like more of the loser's strategy to me: "you kicked me to death, but in the process I bled on your boots, hahaha."

George Galloway for Senate Minority Leader!

21. I just think it stinks
and I'm tired of being told WELL IT'S BETTER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE. There are VALID REASONS why these damn people have no business being judges. I agree with you - the backdown is sickening.

2. you are right dancingbear. lol was just thinking
pretty good arguement on the otherside to not have come to an agreement. lol. i become wishy washy. i wanted to see a down and out fight on the floor and let frist go all out, but also i see the advantage to what happened, if the democrats will use it, pisses off right and christian coalition and hopefully frist wont let go and go too far, causing a fight between the repugs

but i agree with the main point of your post

That as Democrats, our greatest strength, but at the same time our greatest weakness, is our diversity and tolerance for different opinions.

Jus kidding...yes to both. If I wanted to be a drone and take my thinking points from someone "above", I'd be a Republican.

I go months without writing but I never stop reading. I love the debate because our passion is the soil. We are all learning,
who knew I would feel in my 40s the way I did at 17...I want my country back...or my happy Kap'n crunch with the prize in the box image of my country. I want to be IGNORANT again...not really.:)

It's practice for debating in the real world and I also find out tons of information you wouldn't find anywhere else all laid out nicely for you to just read. :) This is probably the only place I spend online besides chatting with people.

18. Why DU is great: I can't decide which side I'm on. Both sides have
damn convincing arguments.

I'm leaning one way, but that could change.

Good on ya, DU.

With great minds like these, I can't for the life of me understand why there are no DNC operatives/interns taking notes.

Or perhaps there are, I hope?

We don't have to 100% agree with the outcome, but now we can go on with the Constitution and Senate rules intact (for now).

26. I tend to make up my mind.....post, and then read what others are
thinking.

I posted my opinion on the "compromise" at 5:05 p.m. on May 23rd, after hearing what the compromise entailed.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=1803255&mesg_id=1803330

Then and now, I think the deal stunk like a dead skunk.

I've become more astute since turning off the media whores everytime a bit story breaks. They like to brainwash us if they can.

In reference to those citing victory solely because the other side didn't....that's not political analysis, it just being a reactionary.

30. ROFL
repubs do not compromise, and they never accept compromises! Whomever falls for that, is indeed a fool! Repubs lie cheat and steal and if all else fails, they change the rules, in the middle of the game! And btw, since the repubs never want to play by the rules, they only want to change the rules when they no longer from benefit them, how can we, the honest party of the people, ever win?
