About 1,000 U.S. Marines, sailors and soldiers encircled this Euphrates River city in the troubled Anbar province before dawn on Wednesday, launching the second major anti-insurgent operation in this vast western region in less than a month.

The offensives are aimed at uprooting insurgents who have killed more than 620 people since a new Iraqi government was announced on April 28. Many of those Insurgents are thought to be foreign fighters who have slipped across the border from Syria.


Earlier this month, American forces conducted a weeklong operation in the city of Qaim and other Iraqi towns near the Syrian border aimed at rooting out militants allied to Jordanian-born terrorist mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and destroying their smuggling routes into Syria. At least 125 militants were killed in that operation, along with nine U.S. Marines, the military said.

The photo looks like a violation of Geneva Conventions for prisoner humiliation....but who knows. I thought it was disturbing. Would we want this done to one of us?

8. Yes like the Jewish "detainees" were tatooed with numbers

on their arms. The similarity is kind of scary if you think about it. That we are doing horrible things to a people whose country we invaded and it's considered acceptable by our House and Senate, too. Forget Bush Gang they would do this to our own citizens but I can't understand our Senators signing off on this. :shrug:

17. Given that Tom Friedman is proposing closing "Gitmo" this photo seems

to be timely. :shrug: Isn't this as bad as the "Black Cloaked Iraai" wired to his genitals from the Abu Graeb photo's?

The one that looked like "Jesus" on the cross as the soldiers made him stand in that awful pose...wired and cloaked? Writing numbers on the heads of "detainees" like they are a "product" in an assembly line to pass down the prison abuse line to be stamped and blindfolded with "rags" ...i.e. "Rag Heads?"

How much more disgusting can our Military be from the TOP DOWN to allow this abuse to go on? If it was an American Soldier wouldn't it be all over the Cables?
