HEADS UP: Reid to do 90-second 'Anti-Nuke' ad tonight
Reid to Appear in ‘Anti-Nuke’ TV Ad
By Mark Preston
Roll Call Staff

Monday, May. 23; 01:37pm

In an unusual move, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will appear tonight in a 90-second television ad calling on Republicans to stand down on their threat to eliminate the filibuster for judicial nominees.

The ad will appear on the eve of the historic showdown over the minority party’s rights to block President Bush’s judicial nominees.

The commercial will be shown nationally on CNN, CNN Headline News and Fox News Channel and in the Washington, D.C., area on local television, according to Reid aides. The ad is scheduled to run between 7:50 and 8 p.m. and will be paid for by the Alliance for Justice, a liberal advocacy group that opposes the GOP’s proposal to change the judicial filibuster rule.

2. Good idea, badly executed.
Few nonpolitical junkies have any idea of what this issue is really about, or what the stakes are. I think Reid could do a good job of ecplaining it to people, but his audience will be relatively tiny if limited to those three venues. Maybe they don't have the bucks for 90 seconds of prime time during sweeps -- or maybe the spots were already sold -- or both. Either way, the audience that will see this on three networks will be a drop in the bucket compared to how many will watch the season finales of 24 or Extreme Makeover, Home Edition -- How'd They Do That?

I very surprised, in any event, that Fox News agreed to air it.
