"Never did I dream we'd get the TRIFECTA" - GWB June 14, 2002 ---> MP3

FLASHBACK: neoCONs PNAC celebration just after 911

June 14, 2002
Remarks by the President in Texans for Rick Perry Reception
Hyatt Regency Hotel
Houston, Texas
6:09 P.M. CDT

You know, when I was one time campaigning in Chicago, a reporter said, would you ever have a deficit? And I said, I can't imagine it, but there would be one if we had a war, or a national emergency, or a recession. (Laughter.) Never did I dream we'd get the trifecta. (Laughter.)

11. "The power of words"
The Daily Show clip-
http://homepage.mac.com/njenson/movies/dsbush.html

====

On a more serious note-

BUSH:...you're not going to believe what state I was in when I heard about the terrorist attack. I was in Florida. And my chief of staff, Andy Card -- actually I was in a classroom talking about a reading program that works. And I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower -- the TV was obviously on, and I use to fly myself, and I said, "There's one terrible pilot." And I said, "It must have been a horrible accident."

But I was whisked off there -- I didn't have much time to think about it, and I was sitting in the classroom, and Andy Card, my chief who was sitting over here walked in and said, "A second plane has hit the tower. America's under attack."

OOPS!!!
IMPOSSIBLE It was impossible for him to have seen the first plane hit. That footage of the first plane strike (taken by french filmakers who happened to be there) was not aired but until the next day. The 'one bad pilot' comment is total fiction and may reveal something far more sinister.

22. * in his diary "the Pearl Harbor of the 21st century took place today" 911
Emily S. Rosenberg, professor of history at Macalester College, writing in the Chronicle of Higher Education (subscribers only) (Dec. 3, 2003):

The images and references to Pearl Harbor seem to be all around us as the anniversary of the attack looms. They are instantly recognizable. But what do they mean?

The analogies came easily after September 11, 2001, when newspaper headlines picked up the cry of "Infamy!" and President Bush reportedly wrote in his diary that "the Pearl Harbor of the 21st century took place today."...

38. Exactly
The French film makers were here filming a firefighter documentary and happened to be there. Didn't France give the Bush administration a warning? I wonder if the French filmakers were here on purpose or by accident? The special was supposed to be on CBS but never aired. If you have Kazaa you can find it in the documentary section in the movie part.

43. I don't know what's more alarming -- Bush making jokes during the crisis
(as that "terrible pilot" quip implies, assuming it's even true and he didn't blank out) -- or his decision, months later, that the audience would find the story amusing.

Twice. (He used that line on two different groups of people.)

The shrieking, crying, and "oh my God no!" exclamations that one hears in Michael Moore's movie, are a lot closer to what I was feeling at the time.

15. Operation Northwoods

U.S. Military Wanted to Provoke War With Cuba
Book: U.S. Military Drafted Plans to Terrorize U.S. Cities to Provoke War With Cuba
By David Ruppe

N E W Y O R K, May 1, 2001

In the early 1960s, America's top military leaders reportedly drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba.

Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities.

The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba's then new leader, communist Fidel Castro.

America's top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties, writing: "We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba," and, "casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation."

Details of the plans are described in Body of Secrets (Doubleday), a new book by investigative reporter James Bamford about the history of America's largest spy agency, the National Security Agency. However, the plans were not connected to the agency, he notes.

The plans had the written approval of all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and were presented to President Kennedy's defense secretary, Robert McNamara, in March 1962. But they apparently were rejected by the civilian leadership and have gone undisclosed for nearly 40 years.

"These were Joint Chiefs of Staff documents. The reason these were held secret for so long is the Joint Chiefs never wanted to give these up because they were so embarrassing," Bamford told ABCNEWS.com.

"The whole point of a democracy is to have leaders responding to the public will, and here this is the complete reverse, the military trying to trick the American people into a war that they want but that nobody else wants."

Gunning for War

The documents show "the Joint Chiefs of Staff drew up and approved plans for what may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government," writes Bamford.

TRIFECTA

This repeat offense features Dubya comparing the triple tragedies of war, recession and national emergency to winning big (with a "trifecta") at the horse track.

1. Lucky me. I hit the trifecta. (Sep. 15, 2001)

2. You know, I was campaigning in Chicago and somebody asked me, is there ever any time where the budget might have to go into deficit? I said only if we were at war or had a national emergency or were in recession. Little did I realize we'd get the trifecta. (Feb. 27, 2002)

SNIP...

14. I remember -- I remember campaigning in Chicago, and one of the reporters said, would you ever deficit spend? I said only -- only in times of war, in times of economic insecurity as a result of a recession, or in times of national emergency. Never did I dream we'd have a trifecta. (Jun. 7, 2002)

15. You know, we -- these are extraordinary times. I remember campaigning and somebody said, would you ever deficit spend? I said, only if there was a war, or a recession, or a national emergency. I didn't think we were going to get the trifecta. (Jun. 13, 2002)

16. You know, when I was one time campaigning in Chicago, a reporter said, would you ever have a deficit? And I said, I can't imagine it, but there would be one if we had a war, or a national emergency, or a recession. Never did I dream we'd get the trifecta. (Jun. 14, 2002)

There ought to be limits to freedom.
-- George W. Bush, complaining about a website (www.gwbush.com) critical of him, at an Austin Press Conference, May 21, 1999, quoted from www.gwbush.com and the Democratic Alliance, "Yes, They Really Said It!"

"God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."
