Wingnut hero Ayn Rand quote on Abortion (guaranteed to infuriate them)
Edited on Fri May-20-05 10:42 AM by Sandpiper
The far right worships Ayn Rand because of her ultra laissez faire economic views. But when it came to the "pro-life" movement, she had this to say:

"Never mind the vicious nonsense of claiming that an embryo has a 'right to life.' A piece of protoplasm has no rights -— and no life in the human sense of the term. One may argue about the later stages of a pregnancy, but the essential issue concerns only the first three months. To equate a potential with an actual, is vicious; to advocate the sacrifice of the latter to the former, is unspeakable."

Be sure to share with any Rand loving Repuke you might know.

2. Like most philosophers
You have to pick and choose to get the bits you want.

5. They also choose to ignore
That Rand's atheism was a central component to her philosophy.

19. Don't you dare call Ayn Rand a philosopher
The quality of her work is extremely poor. I expect higher quality thinking (though certainly not higher quality writing) from my undergraduates. I consider my reading of Objectivist Epistemology to have been a complete and utter waste of my time. It would have been more enlightening to have instead watched a couple more episodes of the Simpsons.

I am one of the many of the grad students in my department who are in the habit of hiding her books behind actual works of philosophy when coming across them in a bookstore.

3. This also applies directly to stem cell research as well.
Stem cells are just protoplasm--undifferentiated building blocks.

7. I don't care for her philosophies, but I have no doubt
That if Ayn Rand were alive today, she would whole-heartedly endorse stem cell and cloning research, and greet religious objections to it with complete contempt.

15. Probably
I think you are right.

But then again, sometimes it suprises me how many people are willing to sell out for this administration.

4. I don't understand. Why would the far right worship her?
She is an atheist.

10. The "far right" is not monolithic. There are unlikely bedfellows there.
The Ayn Randians constitute a minority akin to the (Faux)Libertarians. They are the "Greed Is Good" contingent who thrill at the "might makes right" predations on the right. Not really atheistic, they "worship" the Golden Calf of unlimited personal wealth and power. They're Social Darwinists, not devotees of Intelligent Design at all.

6. Not arguing here
but her hero characters were very ethical, moral people who had values and stuck with them. Not at all like the modern Repuke.

The laissez faire capitalism in her books is romance, just as communism is. Human nature precludes either from working.

8. Sorry, I'm not impressed

Ayn Rand was an intellectual quack whose work is nothing more than a moralistic justification of greed and selfishness based on a poor reading of Aristotle. Basically, she took Aristotle's law of identity, defined to her convenience what it means to be human (i.e., an acquisitive individual) and attacked anything that suggested that being human had anything to do with living among other humans in a broader society. It is a formula for proving anything anyone wants.

Although I support a woman's right to choose, I am not going to rely on the words of a philosophical fraud to buttress the case.

9. Most of the Randroids I've...
...met online and elsewhere are atheists. I would say that most of them are not against abortion, especially when it comes to fetuses with less "potential" (i.e., those with genetic disabilities or deformities) than required for their imagined Objectivist Super-men. In some ways atheist wingnuts are even scarier than their fundie counterparts.

14. Ayn Rand was a truly scary person. She also wrote a lot of claptrap.
For example, in one of her books (I think "Atlas Shrugged") she equated soybean production with wheat production. The villains were requiring that soybeans be grown instead of wheat and this was somehow bad. But in fact, soybeans and wheat are rotational crops, one would not necessarily substitute one for the other. In fact, in southern regions of the U.S., soybeans are grown after wheat in the same growing season (double cropped). A small detail, perhaps, but just one example of her sloppy research.

17. Most Ayn Rand worshippers vote Libertarian not Republican
She's a cult figure with a few screwballs on the right, but your standard Hannity fanboy probably hasn't even heard of her, much less respects her opinions.

By the way, I've probably posted this idea on DU before, but I strongly feel that somebody should produce Objectivist Porn: "His Fountainhead" and "Atlas Tugged", for example.
