1. The Enabling Act
In order to accomplish all this, Hitler said, he first needed the Enabling Act. Since this act would alter the German constitution, a two-thirds majority was necessary. Hitler needed 31 non-Nazi votes to pass it. The Center Party provided these votes after Hitler made a false promise to them. Four hundred and forty votes were registered for the Enabling Act, while a mere 84 votes were opposed – the social Democrats. In glory the Nazi Party stood to their feet and sang the Nazi anthem, the Hörst Wessel song. The German Democratic party had finally been eliminated, and Hitler’s dream for Nazi command became closer to reality.

The Enabling Act granted Hitler the power he craved and could use without objection from the Reichstag. Shortly after the passing of The Enabling Act all other political parties were dissolved. Trade unions were liquidated and opposition clergy were arrested. The Nazi party had, as Hitler said, become the state. By August 1934, Hitler became commander-in-chief of the armed forces. This was in addition to being President and Führer of the German Reich, to whom every individual in the armed forces pledged unconditional obedience. The Reichstag was no longer a place for debate, but rather a cheering squad in favor of whatever Hitler might say.

4. Hitlers Reichstag fire certainly helped it pass
Shortly after Hitler was appointed Chancellor, the German Reichstag building caught fire. Hitler immediatly blamed it on the "communist threat". Many later thought the Nazis started the fire.

Sound familiar???

8. Promises, promises...
You wrote: "Hitler needed 31 non-Nazi votes to pass it. The Center Party provided these votes after Hitler made a false promise to them."

Later Hitler "negotiated with" Chamberlain:

British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain holds the paper containing the resolution to commit to peaceful methods signed by both Hitler and himself on his return from Germany in September 1938. Chamberlain said: "My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time."

Anyone think that Blair may join Chamberlain in the history books in the chapter on misguided prime ministers?

11. To defend Chamberlain a bit
Edited on Thu May-19-05 01:08 PM by DrDebug
Chamberlain had a visit with Hitler and he was very impressed by Hitler which was something he shouldn't have done in retrospect and he sincerely thought that he could trust Hitler and that there wouldn't be a war. After the visit he even made the following statement about Hitler:

"… a man who could be relied upon when he had given his word."
- Life of Neville Chamberlain by Keith Feiling, London, 1946

http://christianactionforisrael.org/medigest/apr98/quotes.html
(The source may be a bit strange, but that's where I found the quote I was looking for)

I get the impression - also from the memo - that Blair knew exactly what was going on when he joined Bush in his war efforts. I don't think that Blair was misguided unlike Chamberlain.

If Blair is lucky then he'll end up in the misguided PM sections, but I don't think he belongs there.

12. Interesting quote, thank you
You wrote that Chamberlain trusted Hitler and was very impressed with him; is it fair to say that Blair trusts Bush and (at least in some respects) is very impressed with him?

You think Chamberlain was misguided, but Blair knew exactly what was going on. You may be right, but does Blair even now really know how much is going on?

Is Blair's intelligence somewhat superficial?

I don't know whether Blair is really impressed by Bush
I don't get that impression and I can't recall seeing comments like that. It is clear that they trust one-another.

The US and the UK are very close and have been close for a long time now, so I think that the Blair administration has a pretty good overview of what is going on and that they have access to the uncensored reports as well, so they know that the war isn't going according to plan.

Blair appears to be an intelligent and smart man unlike Bush who only wants summaries and has people write/queue his speeches which means that he will make decision based upon a lot more information. But it can be superficial as well. Either way he is a better actor than Bush.

17. I expect Blair is probably well aware that the war hasn't gone to plan,
Edited on Thu May-19-05 02:46 PM by ROH
but is he really aware of the full extent of the Neocon agenda?

Blair might be reasonably intelligent, but maybe he does not look into some subjects in real depth?

16. I wouldn't be giving Blair such an easy pass...
They have Internet in England? Blair has people he can hire to read all the major newspapers in the world and give him reports?
as that TV show with the cute red-head used to say:

"The Truth is Out There"...

13. Hitler's "Enabling Act" Identical To Bush's P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Acts
The Reichstag Fire was considered "arson, an act of terrorism", so Hitler imposed The Enabling Act for "protection against terrorists". It was the beginning of the end...
Never EVER give up your rights "for protection against terrorists". Think Bush can or will protect us? He's only protecting himself and "his base". ("The haves and the have mores").

15. Whew! I feel better already.
Who wouldn't want to live in a country with the same laws as North Korea?

I'm so proud of my fellow Americans for enabling this prick and his cabal and letting them gut our country to make a few of their friends filthy rich.
