1. Usually the press is falling over itself to help Bush out.
Now they're having to strongarm someone to do it. Interesting.

2. They actually think they are going to spin their way out of this
"If we just say the right words, everything will be fine."

Except that nobody believes a thing we say anymore...

3. The Whitehouse still has a lot to apologize for...
First things first. Then, Newsweek can apologize FOR NOTHING. What they reported is most likely true based on all previous accounts. This administration is getting farther and farther away from reality, amd nobody is calling THEM on it.

5. You know all the media should be worried, it could happen to you next
First Dan Rather, now Newsweek, next CNN, never know, but blaming stuff on the press is getting pretty common with this Administration.

8. How does a frigging MAGAZINE go "on T.V."?
Are they going to dress some guy up as a giant Newsweek and he will say in Arabic "Yes, I misreported, we love your Koran! Love, love, love it. Take my Bible. Please!!! (hahahahahaha) And thanks for inviting me on the show, Abdul, because I was just saying to the TIME magazine on the shelf how beautiful it is here in Afghanistan....."

9. Tell them to stick it!
I mean it if I were Newsweek I would start pulling out all the shit that they have in the "Things we are not going to write about" plie and go to town!

I would not mess with newsweek, because they can set the tone for other news orgs...

I hope Newsweek has enough backbone to say no to the WH.

14. That is a HUGE mistake on the part of the WH
Especially if all Newsweek says is, well, we showed it to them, they didn't complain about that part, so we published. In other words, they didn't deny it, they only got upset AFTER the shitstorm. What inference would the average Arab on the street take from that? Hey, that is the TRUTH of the matter.

The focus will then reshift to where it needs to be, to the SOUTHCOM report. They can solve this whole matter by RELEASING the report, and it would renew calls to so do.

But that little Koran tidbit is probably the least damning part of the whole tome....

The WH said that because they figure NEWSWEEK will refuse. Arab TV should interview Craig Crawford, they may not like what they hear...

18. NW was set up and now,,,
The Bush Junta are pushing the NW folks noses in the shitpile. NW needs to print the report from the "official" that gave them the story and also print his name.

15. GOOD! Then Newsweek can tell them how we no longer have a free press
and that the Bush cabal FORCED them to do it. Maybe Newsweek should get someone like Seymour Hersh or George Galloway to be the spokesperson.

that would be a good starting point, if he wants to save himself from the twilight zone.

23. It's called (to) "grovel".
Edited on Wed May-18-05 06:19 PM by necso
grovel: To behave in a servile or demeaning manner; cringe.

The neocons want Newsweek to grovel (to the neocons) and take the focus off of the real story. (As though many of the offended are going to believe a retraction -- or relied on Newsweek for the story of these (supposed) desecrations in the first place -- tales of this have been going around for some time.)

After the thing with Rather, you would have thought that all of the major media had gotten the message: "The neocons are going to (may) jam you up if say anything that they don't like (with or without warning -- and with or without them having previously reviewed it), so be extra careful."

But it's hard to avoid a really good setup (generally speaking, who knows here), particularly when there is other evidence that supports the point. And the key point is whether or not the government has admitted to this stupidity on some level... and they can't afford to. -- It would expose the "Christian" Crusade (my "God" is bigger than yours) that is at the "heart" of these misadventures.

The neocons are looking to consolidate their power -- and enjoy their "spoils of war" -- and it will get worse before it gets better.

Oh, and the neocons would like Newsweek to say that such incidents never took place. (And again generally speaking, it's nice to get someone else to lie for you -- this makes them partners in deceit -- if not in crime.)

25. Yes, NW should accept. And the first item up should be interviews ...
... with those two Brits released from Gitmo, as well as anybody else who was there and released. I suggest a full feature-length documentary, just take their time and get everyone's point of view.

This could come around and bite bush in the a**. Yes, I know the taste is as nasty as it gets on earth, but NW needs to grow some fangs.
