Question about the filibuster situation:
Do the repukes realize that when (I'm being deliberate in my use of "when") Democrats are back in power in Congress, this no- filibuster thing would hurt THEM?

Or is there some clause that would help them escape being victim to their own evil ways?

Or do they just not care right now and aren't looking further than two inches off their face?

3. If that's true, they're even bigger idiots than I thought.
Though the idea of God coming along and whoooshing them all away and leaving us to our peaceful, law-abiding selves is quite nice, I have to say.

11. Well, I hate to tell them and everyone else who believes it,
but I think this Rapture stuff is a bunch of hooey (and I'm a Christian, too) and they'd be better off all holding their breath.

In fact, that's rather a fine idea.....

2. When we go into martial law, it will be real hard to
make a fuss as a democratic or any other opposition party.

6. Ok let's assume no Rapture, no Diebold funny tricks (I know, ha ha
Edited on Wed May-18-05 01:44 PM by Bouncy Ball
ha), and no martial law.

Then what? If this passes, they are stuck with it even when they are a minority party again, do I have this right?

So either they are:

a) really stupid
b) don't care about the consequences
c) don't PLAN on ever being a minority party again.

21. They're counting on the innate sense of fair play among
Democrats to reverse the changes, just in time for them.

7. Bouncy, this has been on my mind, as well.
Are they so confident of their absolute power (into eternity) that they would take such a short-sighted approach? It would be pretty amusing to see this come back and bite them in the butt at some point down the road.

taking over when the new congress convenes.

10. What do you mean by reinstate?
They'll kill the no-filibuster thing right before the Dem majority takes over?

Nevermind, I re-read it and that is what you are saying.

So they'll have it for now, then if they suspect an election is going to tip too far Dem, they'll remove it?

9. They have control of the Vote Counting Boxes they never plan on
returning to the rule of law. Face it they are Hypocrites. They are pushing a judge now who was inspired by the judges who backed MLK. But they do not like the judges being used to overturn popular votes and legislative action. WTF These people can not put together a coherent argument and no body calls them on it. That is why they lie so often. They want us to be so busy documenting all of them we do not have any time for anything else.

12. For the religious reich, this is a last ditch effort in the kulturkampf.
They think if they can put a few justices on the court in the mold of Clarence Thomas, that they can overturn Roe v. Wade, disincorporate the first amendment, allow states to establish religion and teach Christianity in the public schools, put gays back in the closet, outlaw birth control, and return our culture to that of the 14th century.

14. So then they also must plan on doing something pretty radical
about every race except the white race, since racial minorities didn't exactly have an easy time of it.

13. Here's my thought: They don't care, b/c the End Times will be here first.
I'm serious.

Really.

Think about it. This all has to do with abortion, evolution and the banning of prayer in school, and every other way they think "activist judges" have moved America away from it's "proper" place as a God-fearing, Christian nation.

They are trying to save as many souls as they can before the End Times comes. They do not think in terms of what will happen in a few years, because they see this as their chance to act NOW, because they think Armageddon will come soon.

By "they", I mean... just look at what the Repub side of Congress has become filled with: the likes of Frist, Santorum, Delay, etc. Rabid fundamentalist End-Timers.

Note that the republicans who express reservations about the nuclear option are the more moderate (read "sane") ones, such as McCain, Snowe, etc. They know the sun will come out tomorrow, so they don't dare eliminate the filibuster.

19. In other words, the insane are running the asylum.
This is the third response on this thread with this reasoning. As I said above, if they actually BELIEVE this Rapture hooey, they are INSANE. Seriously, I strongly question their mental health.

You are right, the sun will come out tomorrow, and the next day and the next day and it's my belief that it will until many many years from now when our SUN goes all red dwarf or supernova or whatever the hell the name is on us, and THEN we'll have problems.

Or maybe peak oil might knock us down a peg or two.

But anyone staking their future on hitching a ride with one of the Four Horsemen is, to me, on the same level as the stereotypical street person with a sign reading "THE END IS NEAR!" and should be hauled in for a mental-health evaluation, not in charge of our nation's business.

15. Bird in the hand is
worth two in the bush. I guess that's what they're thinking. Sort of like us when we did the Bork thing. The politics of personal destruction thing just grew from there as the Repukes sought payback. Neither party looks to the long term, only to the next election.

when they are the minority again, they will whine about the no-filibuster thing, whip up their rw shock troops into mass hysteria, and claim the democrats are anti-religious bigots. idiot america either won't notice the complete turnaround, or won't care.
