Bushists are OUTRAGED over Newsweek Story. Compare to Abu Ghraib
Where was the outrage then? Then it was "a few misfits." Now the honor of the US is at stake? :wtf:

This point is more elegantly made by Suzanne Nossell at Democracy Arsenal:

http://www.democracyarsenal.org/2005/05/roiling_flush.html

Lawrence DiRita is demanding accountability from Newsweek, but when the Abu Ghraib allegations were revealed he said that those implicated were "still only a tiny percentage of the more than 300,000 troops who have served in Iraq" and that "If you look at the tenor of the coverage, it's been focused on policies and procedures that are at best indirectly associated with the activities at that prison." Hmm. Not much accountability there.

Newsweek made a blunder that has led to horrific consequences. But we all know that the reason its mistake was so serious has everything to do with the context in which it occurred, a context of the Administration's making. DiRita's insistence on accountability from Newsweek would sound a lot less tinny if accompanied by some accountability from the Pentagon's end as well.

1. It;'s the culture of life syndrome. When confronted with kool-aid they
start spewing shit forgetting about the person they spit it on.

4. The Deaths were not Newsweek's fault
Edited on Tue May-17-05 04:08 PM by oxbow
last Thursday, General Richard Myers, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at the Pentagon that rioting in Afghanistan was related more to the on-going political reconciliation process there than to a controversial note buried in the pages of Newsweek. It was only much later that White House Spokesman Scott McLellan came out and contradicted General Myers, saying in effect that Newsweek was responsible for ruining America's reputation abroad, and that the riots were a result of that article. Political scapegoating of the worst kind IMO.

7. Oh, that vast Right Wing!
What will they think up next? Or rather, what will they tell their adoring followers to next think?

Lawrence DiRita, the the the the lip-sweating, water-guzzling, used car dealer at the Pentagon? That Larry?

8. And that right there is an outrage
"Newsweek made a blunder that has led to horrific consequences."

What was Newsweek's blunder? That it dared to print the truth for once? That it dared to even slightly challenge the Bushco torture machine? Those are the only blunders that I see.

This news about Qurans being tossed town a toilet and what have you have been around for well over a year. There have been articles documenting this from Denver to Australia, with both anonymous and named sources. The only reason that Newsweek is getting called on this is because they are a nationaly distributed magazine, and the article started getting some nationwide traction. After the Abu Graib mess, the misadministration didn't want another prison outrage to be on the record, so they decided to shut up the folks at Newsweek.

General Myers has even stated that this Newsweek article had nothing to do with the riots in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Nope, the only blunder that Newsweek has made is that they didn't stand by their story, and instead caved to this corrupt, criminal gang of thugs in the White House.
