E-mail Action Needed! Please send this e-mail to you favorite MSM source
This is a copy of the e-mail that I just sent to the BBC News On-line, please copy any and all of it and send it to any website (after changing the news sites names from BBC) that is printing these Lies about the Newsweek "retraction."

Dear BBC News;

You are printing and repeating Lies! As late as 10:06pm EDT May 16, 2005, Your website published a story entitled "Newsweek withdraws Koran Report." This is False.

Then in the FIRST sentence, You wrote "US magazine Newsweek has issued a full retraction of its report that a Koran was flushed down a toilet at Guantanamo Bay by US interrogators." This is ALSO false.

Your story then clearly contradicts it's self 6 sentences later in the same article where it reads:

'No longer sure'

"In a one-sentence statement released on Monday evening, Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker said: 'Based on what we know now, we are retracting our original story that an internal military investigation had uncovered Koran abuse at Guantanamo Bay.'"

This is not the same as what you reported and printed in paragraph 1. The key word you are missing are "...that an internal military investigation had uncovered..."! This is VERY DIFFERENT than what you reported in Paragraph 1 of this story. This so-called retraction does NOT say a Koran was NOT flushed down the Toilet by interrogators, it was. It was a retraction of a report that this FACT had made it into a U.S. Government REPORT on this abuse of the Koran!

Their is a BIG difference and you should be ashamed and apologize for Publishing this distorted LIE. I had thought that your staff would have had a better understanding of the English language.

I am frankly Shocked that the BBC News would participate in this distortion and Slander of another News Organization.

(sign name here)

(The line, "I had thought that your staff would have had a better understanding of the English language..." could be omitted, as that was meant as a backhanded slap, directed at the BBC.)

Thanks,

Up2Late (a.k.a. Tom)

2. Huh? Newsweek did retract their report on top of an apology.
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=%2BNewsweek+retracts&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d

Whitaker issued a statement yesterday retracting the story.

3. If I heard right today
the only retraction involved was the part about the government source. Quite a distraction, isn't it?

4. Newsweek used the words retraction and error
Trying to read more between the lines is hopeless.
If you listen to the video of Whitaker giving the retraction, there can be no mistake that they caved to white house pressure.

WASHINGTON — Newsweek magazine formally retracted on Monday a story published last week that said U.S. interrogators of Muslim prisoners at Guantanamo Bay desecrated the Koran.
"Based on what we know now, we are retracting our original story," Editor Mark Whitaker said in a statement. Whitaker had written in the magazine's latest issue that the May 9 report might not be true but had stopped short of a retraction. (Video: Newsweek apologizes)

Newsweek's admission of error in publishing the story, which was followed by protests by Muslims around the world and riots that resulted in at least 15 deaths in Afghanistan, came after a day of sharp criticism from the Bush administration.

5. When and Where did you see a Video of this? I've yet to find one.
Until I see one, I will NOT simply ASSUME that their is a Video.

This is all Echo and Spin at it's most deceptive.

7. That's NOT "the Retraction," That's an out of context clip from...
Edited on Wed May-18-05 12:23 AM by Up2Late
...a PBS interview.

The alleged "retraction" that all the MSM whores all reported about, and everyone who wants to believe have ASSUMED to be true, but have never seen or heard is this:

"In a one-sentence statement released on Monday evening, Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker said: 'Based on what we know now, we are retracting our original story that an internal military investigation had uncovered Koran abuse at Guantanamo Bay.'"

I still haven't found anyone who has ever seen this statement other than that "it was in all the papers."

It took me an hour because of the battle that site and may Pop-up and ad-ware Blocker had, but I was able transcribe what he said and will post it if it comes to that.

And, The New York Times just published a New report on this at this like where it says:

<http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/18/politics/18koran.html?ex=1274068800&en=b712e7b9e4ce5b3a&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss>

"...Mr. DiRita said that inmates had reported taking offense at this kind of incident and that log books of any such episodes were being examined.

Newsweek's retraction dealt only with its mistaken assertion that the report on a months-long Pentagon investigation was expected to confirm the toilet accusation. But around the world, discussion continued on the larger issue of whether such abuse ever occurred at Guantánamo, as released prisoners have asserted over the years..."
Plus much more.

Also, I believe due to my angry e-mail, the BBC News has edited or considered editing their web page and ALL of the previous RSS reports as followed:

Tuesday, 17 May, 2005, 02:06 GMT 03:06 UK
Newsweek withdraws Koran report

But in my RSS reader it still says:

Newsweek retracts Koran report
Newsweek withdraws its story that a copy of the Koran was desecrated at Guantanamo Bay. 5/16/2005 5:51 PM

Newsweek withdraws Koran report
Newsweek retracts its story that a copy of the Koran was desecrated by the US military at Guantanamo Bay. 5/16/2005 10:06 PM

and
Newsweek pulls Koran report
Newsweek retracts its story that a copy of the Koran was desecrated by the US military at Guantanamo Bay. 5/16/2005 10:06 PM

Newsweek withdraws Koran report
Newsweek retracts its story that a copy of the Koran was desecrated by the US military at Guantanamo Bay. 5/16/2005 10:06 PM

Newsweek withdraws Koran report

Unfortunately, I didn't save the original reports, so I can't compare the two.

9. Newsweek icon? You mean the one that starts the video?
I did that, and will not click your link again, every time I do, that site throws so much crap (cookies, adware, etc.) on my computer, that I have to reboot, like I just did.

If you are implying that I didn't watch the video about Newsweek, rest assured, I did, several times, and that is NOT what I asked for in my original post.

Did you even read what I Posted originally and what I posted at the link I included? Because if not, I don't know why I'm wasting my time on you. What I asked for is the Original source Video of the person making the exact statement that every Newspaper that ran this story reported on, or the written document that the following words came from

"Based on what we know now, we are retracting our original story that an internal military investigation had uncovered Koran abuse at Guantanamo Bay."

Not, "...giving that we already said we made a mistake, and that we regretted it, we went ahead and said, of course, Ah, ah, that amounts to a retraction..." from the video clip you refer to.

This version of the quote (from BBC News) was lead by: "In a one-sentence statement released on Monday evening, Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker said:...," but I have also seen it credited to "a Spokesman," "...the statement from Newsweek said," etc.

But you know what? It ain't on the Newsweek website and it's not in the Washington Post story either.
<http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/16/AR2005051601262.html>

Which is also odd, seeing how they (The Washington Post) are the Parent Company of Newsweek and seem to be the ONLY newspaper that got the story right.

But, of course, you probably won't read that either. So why bother.:banghead:
