How much for doctors visit to General Practitioner in your area?
I called up a doctor's office out of the yellow pages, just a primary care phyician's office.
The cost quoted was $186 for first visit, and $130/visit once established. This is not a fancy place.
This seems outrageous to me.

I don't have insurance, so don't go quoting what you pay in co-pays.
The last thing the uninsured need is to be told how great other's have it.

1. I pay for all my visits, too...
because I have a high-deductible -- that is, no insurance unless I have over $5000 in fees.

And as a consequence, I don't ever GO to the Dr. I have no idea what a regular visit would cost.

A well-child visit for my two sons together is over $200, though. It makes your hair stand on end. I'm going to start saving up for a physical for myself this summer!

I think over $100 for a fifteen minute visit is outrageous -- but it is not uncommon, apparently.

2. In Northern Wisconsin
It cost between 60.00 and 90.00 depending on what level they bill you at. Level meaning different things the M.D. had to do. The Clinics here and in surrounding areas are part of the Marshfield Clinic system which is a large chain thru out WI.

5. Have it great?

Most insured families pay thousands in premiums every year.

14. I would love a safety net.
I did not say that healthcare is not in a crisis, just that the totally uninsured have just that....nothing.

21. No, they do have something called "not paying your bills"
you still GET treatment, but you never pay for it. It used to work better before bankruptcy reform though.

I know I sound snotty but that's what I was reduced to when my son was an infant and I was in the poorhouse (figuratively). It technically works.

6. Well the last 5 years I've only gone to the ob/gyn
but they charged almost $300 per visit.

I love my kids pediatricians thought. $50 for visits. Luckily I have insurance, but one of my friends was between insurance and her kids needed vaccines. The doctor waived the fee.

11. You should go to a Planned Parenthood
or some place similar to that for gyn services. They are much more affordable. You can call 1-800-230-7526 to locate a Planned Parenthood near you. Most areas have Planned Parenthoods, but not all. If there isn't a Planned Parenthood in your area, ask around about similiar services in your area (maybe call health department). For example, Penquis CAP is the central Maine equivalent to Planned Parenthood. I think it's associated with the Maine United Way.

8. While visiting Florida I came down with a nasty sinus infection.
Visited a local "reputable name" and was charged $95.00 for the visit (more time spent filling out forms than actual Dr. time) and the meds were $135.00. :-(

10. That sounds about right to me.
I've paid about that for a doctor's visit before.
There are some doctor's offices that have sliding scale fees based on the income your family makes. You might be able to find some places like this by contacting the health department in your area. I brought my son to a place with sliding scale fees and I only had to pay $15 for the appointment.

13. A couple of things.
That $168 is for a high-level history and physical, which is what the doctor needs to do in order to get to know you and your health issues. The $130 regular visit is too high--they're billing too high for just a regular visit, it sounds like.

Visits at David's practice are based on their billing level, so I'm not sure what they'd charge. I know that they work it out for people without insurance, something that was important to David and something he checked into before signing his contract. Of course, he's just salary now, but they're pressuring him to join the partner track, and he's trying to get the partners to do more in this area.

Internists tend to charge a bit more, based on my experience, probably due to a bit of a superior feeling ( ;) --my hubby's one). Is there a federally funded clinic in your area? They charge less and are often easier to get into. Of course, the care isn't always that great . . .

If you're in Michigan, come on by Battle Creek and see David. He'll do what he can for you. Trust me, no one's more pissed off about the insurance situation than David.

22. $15 for my PCP
I went to an after-hours place last month and found they weren't covered by my plan (but I was afraid I had pneumonia). It was $150.00, including the antibiotics.
