NYC Freedom Tower will be just another Tower of Babel.
Edited on Thu May-12-05 07:00 PM by bigtree
In the Mesopotamian plain between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in what is now modern Iraq, is a mound, or tell, of broken mud-brick buildings and debris. This is all that remains of the ancient famed city of Babylon. A tower was built there, the famed Tower of Babel, which many thought would enable them to get closer to God. It may have, but not as they had envisioned. Babylon crumbled.

In shellshocked New York City good people, well-meaning folk torn by tragedy, will get behind a project to resurrect the destroyed symbol of our capitalism and erect a 1,776 foot tower that they will tag with the dubious name of Freedom.

"Failure to rebuild is not an option — not now and not ever. We will not tolerate unnecessary delays," says Pataki.

The World Trade Center was a dubious project from start to finish- way over budget with a mountain of office space virtually unsellable at the time to the private sector. The WTC turned into a monument to meaningless capitalism, and excess for excess sake, where money-changers met to lord their wealth over the heads of the hapless rabble living below and beyond. That is what the new tower will represent also. There is already a memorial to the dead at the site of the terrorism. This project is essentially an monument to the money driven imperialism that our detractors accuse our country of.

I also think the new tower will be a target for every expression of resistance to U.S. expansionism abroad. Just another provocation. Another chip on our shoulder. On New York's shoulder.

3. What I'm wondering
is why are they in such a hurry? Wouldn't they want it to be perfect for the people who died? What's the rush?

7. It seems suspish
that they're in SUCH a rush.

Rome wasn't built in a day, and sometimes it's important to get perspective on things before the memorial is built. (cough, reagan, cough).

6. Good points
Those who don't see our actions as in "defense of freedom," will probably target this false symbol.

8. oh GET REAL people...
Only 70 floors of this structure are going to be available for office space, and that's pretty average, dare I say, below average for a large skyscraper. The Sears Tower here in Chicago has 110 habitable floors.

The rest of the structure is going to purely visual, dare I say, ceremonial, just so they can reach the symbolic 1776 feet height. And already we're hearing rumbling from Pataki that the design is being revised, possibley to be shorter?

That being said, whatever building we put there will be a target regardless of its height, so we might as well stay vigilant and put up a structure that makes us proud and looks good doing it.

For the record, I'm not a fan of the approved design, and haven't liked it since I first saw it.

Calm down people, jeez.

10. I do not think
that you understand what the OP is saying. It's not the outer form that defines the tower from the plain of Shinar. It's the brick that was substituted for stone, and the slime that was used for morter.

9. 10 years to reach full occupancy of the WTC
Want to place your bets how long the Freedom Tower will take to reach it - given the economic climate of NY and the stratospheric costs of real estate?

11. It'll be a nice piece of irony
It'll be a nice piece of irony when the "Freedom Tower" is guarded like Fort Knox and you'll have to practically be strip searched to get inside.

13. Do the "little Eichmanns" and "money-changers" know who they are
Can a person be so aware of what he or she is doing yet continue to do it for the sake of self-interest or for lack of care? If you ask me, that's who Ward Churchill was condemning when those towers fell.

14. Interesting.
I think that you are correct; from everything that I saw after the initial uproar, he seemed pretty clear about that.
