3. On January 22, 2001, the average for regular was $1.45. . .
or so CNN reported:

http://archives.cnn.com/2001/US/01/22/gas.prices/

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline rose 3.84 cents to $1.45 over the past two weeks, ending an 11-week downward trend, the Lundberg Report said Sunday.

The increase at the pump was seen in all regions of the country except the West, where prices fell. But Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the survey, said prices were beginning to rise along the West Coast because California's current power shortage is interfering with gas deliveries.

Prices "did not go up in the West but probably will very soon," she said.

In the latest survey, published January 19, Salt Lake City, Utah, had the lowest price per gallon of unleaded self-serve regular, at $1.33. Honolulu, Hawaii had the highest, at $1.92.

Here are average prices for a gallon of self-serve regular in a few U.S. cities:

Denver: $1.40

Los Angeles: $1.48

St. Louis: $1.48

Boston: $1.56
