America is very sick, perhaps terminally ill.
seriously, we've descended into an absolutely shameful time in our history, i hope we can rise above this sickness soon.

3. I spent the better part of my higher education years in Canada at the
University of Toronto and in the U.K at Cambridge. After having come back home and lived and raised a family, I fondly remember what it was like to be with friends with no pretensions of imperial grandeur and living ordinary lives in meaningful ways. We are very sick because we have become used to the arrogance of the imperial mindset and do not even know what it means to be human anymore.

8. Ya caught my eye with this.
"...living ordinary lives in meaningful ways."

Nice turn of phrase - and a wonderful way to live. It's been forgotten in the US that that is even possible.

11. One of the consequences of our imperial mindset is that we cannot
acknowledge any flaws in ourselves. We always have the best, the brightest and the noblest in everything. It is precisely why we resort to devious ways to "win" from steroid use,to lying about our enemies to what have you. Once down this path it is not possible for us to cure the cancer except by radical surgery.

6. Black box voting
is too well established already.

I think the current power elite will remain there until they (and we) are literally destroyed.

Almost half the public (and 90 percent of them where I live) are like the guy who rode the bomb down in "Dr. Srangelove." They are looking forward to the Apocalypse.

13. let's hope they are on the eve of THEIR destruction, not ours... bbv
is terrifying, you're right. I hold out hope for 'something' (anything!) happening that will even slightly improve our chances in '06.

We're not dead yet!

9. the illness is pervasive and systemic
the patient is dying from within. lack of education and greed have combined to beat every cure known to man. key victories in the battle to survive are memories of long ago. religion, once a great balm to many injuries, has been usurped and is now used to further the illness' progress. the prognosis is not good, and surgery will be necessary as some tumors need removed.

12. Don't know when it started, but certainly...
not recently. For the person who suggested Canada - only if you want to go to a sicker place. All of western civilization is and has been in a meltdown and long ago passed the point of no return.

5. But the president talks to God
Edited on Sun May-08-05 08:55 AM by seemslikeadream
When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it

7. His god-tawkin' makes me feel pessimistic about the future.
Especially for all those "brown-skinned people" who happen to live on top of Dumbya's oil.

"... bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran... bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran... bomb Iraaan!..."

10. I Don't Think So
The United States has had rough times before in it's 200+ year history. This is not the first time. We need to stand tall and do the hard work necessary to fix the problems. To run away like punk assed spoiled brats because the solutions aren't being handed out on a silver platter is NOT the answer.

16. Then How Would You Describe Them?
They whine and cry because things aren't going the way they want, but what do they DO to make things better? They talk about going to some other country instead of talking about what can be done to change things, instead of DOING something to change things.

19. I hear ya - it's upsetting when people say they're giving up and leaving
Maybe they're depressed, scared, out of energy, jobs and money. (But please - don't go! We need ALL our people to push back on the bush regime!)

Thanks to DU we've got a place to stand and work from. Archimedes said it long ago, "Give me where to stand and I will move the earth."

For those who feel like giving up - keep coming to DU and ask for help, ask what you can do and when to do it. But don't give up! And please don't leave - we need you!

20. You Said That Very Well
I have never been known for my tact and diplomacy.

The conservatives didn't take control of our country by whining and crying and running away, and we won't take our country back that way. It will take hard work, time and more hard work. And we will have to do it ourselves, we can't expect anyone else to do it for us.

18.  A phoenix has to die before it can be reborn
The people on the north american continent will outlive whatever evil
slave king comes and goes. The slave state of white supremacy, that is
bound in the constitution and a culture of war for supremacy has
always been sick, and is indeed in its dying empire days... the last
gasp of the senate before the reign of the caesars.

Just like with rome, the semblance of representative democracy has
become window dressing on the house of the emperor. The sooner the
economy and empire of casear rot and decay, the better for us all.
The fascist corporatocracy must be destroyed no matter what, and without
war, it can only be done by collapsing the economy.

What emerges from the ashes of the collapsed white mans slave colony,
when the demographics eclipse the white skins altogether come 2050,
is surely another age of the republic, and only by the death of this
evil washington consensus, can a new bird of human liberty fly.

21. But all YOUR CARTOONS help!!!! :-)
America is VERY tired and sick right now. But we have a few good things going for us: 1) a deep sense of rebellion 2) ingenuity, even if it seems latent right now 3) most ARE moral folks, with a deep sense of compassion and 4) we really believe in values like equality, justice, freedom.

Saw Janeanne Garofalo on "NOW"--I agree with her, it is the media's fault, and folks are beginning to wake up to some unpleasant truths.
