Robert Fisk works for
The Indepedent in the U.K.
He spoke with Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez for 25 minutes from Bagdad. You can listen to the whole show by going
here and clicking on "Listen/Watch entire show" near the top. Fisk's report starts about 20 minutes into the show and lasts about 25 minutes.
In his wide-ranging report, he said (this is a very rough summary of just a few of his points):
- Chaos still reigns in Bagdad and many other cities.
- There is gunfire every night.
- The Americans do not patrol at night.
- A single morgue in Bagdad receives the bodies of tens of Iraqis every day.
- Some Iraqis believe the U.S.'s goal is civil war in Iraq.
- The majority of Iraqis believe that the U.S. "just doesn't care about Iraqis".
- Americans are being attacked up to 60x a day in Bagdad alone.
- American soldiers are lacking in "fire discipline" (you can guess what that means).
- That Powell's recent press conference in Bagdad was bizzare (I think that was his word). He was upbeat. Said journalists were being too negative. Lots of good to report. Lots of oil being produced. But that Powell would not adequately respond to questions about all the problems.
It was a very depressing report. I urge you to listen to it and to broadcast its existence to your network. You just don't read this in the papers.
