A court in The Hague turned down a demand by a dozen plaintiffs who wanted to force the Dutch government to arrest US President George W. Bush when he visits the Netherlands Saturday.

1. The prisoners must have objected
in a civilized country such as The Netherlands, incarceration with Bush** would surely be considered "cruel and unusual punishment" or the equivalent.

4. That seems to be
what they are trying to avoid. I guess they don't want the Marines yanked from Iraq and landing in Holland.

3. yeah--far reaching--what an understatement from the judge!!

...Bush will be in the south of the Netherlands this weekend to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

The plaintiffs, mostly left-wing organisations and activists, accused Bush of "numerous grave violations of the Geneva Conventions". They also said the president is responsible for the deaths of civilians in
Afghanistan and
Iraq and Washington's refusal to recognize the International Criminal Court (ICC), the world's first permanent war crimes court.

In the judgement, dated on Tuesday, the court said that the case was political and that the demands "could have far-reaching consequences for US-Dutch relations".

5. The judge was wrong...
if Bush had been thrown in jail the Netherlands would have been hailed by all countries throughout the world and 50% of the US population.

7. Maybe, but
Edited on Wed May-04-05 03:59 PM by forgethell
the Marines would still have busted him out.

And the judge knew that. The United States, even under a Democratic President, will never let one of its Presidents be prosecuted in another country for his acts as President of the United States. It sets a bad precedent.

So what do you think President Cheney would do about it, eh??

8. Maybe they do not want him to end up in their city in the bubble
When Bush had traffic stopped on a German River what would he do to Holland?
