Politicization is far too mild a word: the smoking memo (Ray McGovern)

Proof Bush Fixed The Facts

by Ray McGovern, TomPaine.com

Politicization is far too mild a word. The intelligence on Iraq was not mistaken, it was manufactured. This was mass deception. And we have the smoking memo.

May 04, 2005

(Ray McGovern served 27 years as a CIA analyst and is now on the Steering Group of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity. He works for Tell the Word, the publishing arm of the ecumenical Church of the Saviour.)

"Intelligence and facts are being fixed around the policy."

Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would see those words in black and white—and beneath a SECRET stamp, no less. For three years now, we in Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) have been saying that the CIA and its British counterpart, MI-6, were ordered by their countries' leaders to "fix facts" to "justify" an unprovoked war on Iraq. More often than not, we have been greeted with stares of incredulity.

It has been a hard learning—that folks tend to believe what they want to believe. As long as our evidence, however abundant and persuasive, remained circumstantial, it could not compel belief. It simply is much easier on the psyche to assent to the White House spin machine blaming the Iraq fiasco on bad intelligence than to entertain the notion that we were sold a bill of goods.

Well, you can forget circumstantial. Thanks to an unauthorized disclosure by a courageous whistleblower, the evidence now leaps from official documents—this time authentic, not forged. Whether prompted by the open appeal of the international Truth-Telling Coalition or not, some brave soul has made the most explosive "patriotic leak" of the war by giving London's Sunday Times the official minutes of a briefing by Richard Dearlove, then head of Britain's CIA equivalent, MI-6. Fresh back in London from consultations in Washington, Dearlove briefed Prime Minister Blair and his top national security officials on July 23, 2002, on the Bush administration's plans to make war on Iraq.

Blair does not dispute the authenticity of the document, which immortalizes a discussion that is chillingly amoral. Apparently no one felt free to ask the obvious questions. Or, worse still, the obvious questions did not occur.

between Tenet and his UK counterpart at MI6. The UK guy was told by the US that they will fabricate the facts to justify an invasion because the invasion was going to happen. When straight to a comparrison that is totally irrelevant. Clinton's BJ fib!

4. These are not like the Nixon Watergate tapes unfortunately....
....what is needed is a smoking gun on Bush and the whole BushCo mafia.

But listen, the scary part to all of this is that under the very noses of congress, MSM and the people of the U.S., Bush et al are continuing to do the very same things and at a much more dangerous level of nuclear war risk. This idiot Bush will not bat an eye lash as he takes the world to the brink of annihilation.

5. I think
they'll only get this memo. I don't know if anything else is out there since Bush was out at his Texas "ranch" talking about this so they more then likely didn't have anything video taped or to where it can be released to the public. That is why he goes out there a lot with the Saudi's and with Sharon from Israel. It's so they can do their evil planning in private without tape's like with Nixon. I think this memo is all we're going to get.

6. about those nooks
you echo some of my darker worries, something that I'd rather not even think about but...

underestimating Bush's talent at creating chaos, misery and destruction may be the most dangerous thing Americans have done since underestimating 'you know who' (name starts with an H).

Some days, they are harder to keep in check than other days.

What concerns me most is how effectively this cabal covers their tracks and how talented they are at manipulating info/facts. Such actions concern me,...on a number of levels.

*sigh* Patiently, patiently waiting for the truth to ease its way into the light.

8. Ray concludes at the end that
we need brave whistleblowers out of the CIA as well. You are correct about the dangers of busco**. We have nothing left to hope for except a huge leak from the CIA to stop the madness. :scared:

9. heres to ray mcgovern. church of the savior is an awesome group
of people here in dc. the leader is gordon cosby who served in ww2 by the way and is such a progressive you would all be mighty proud of this man. a real follower of Christ if i ever saw one
i attend that church when i can and its such a lift

they also have various ministries incl housing for the homeless and low income and treating those with addictions and any number of real-life needs for those afflicted. and not just on paper either - they really live the talk
gordon also references ray sometimes in his sermons and his political efforts to expose this completely unjust war.

an exceptional and unfortunately unique group of Christians
(ie not the kind who advocate life only in cases that suit their agenda, not the kind who are telling jokes of their visits to chippendales and not the kind who invoke Gods name while stepping all over the masses to gain whatever profit they can)

sorry - i dont tend to get upset anymore but the bush hypocrisy is just staggering

12. Thank you for posting this.
I feel very vindicated, although I am NOT a happy camper to say the least.

Now I'm going to post this link on my favorite mixed message board for the edification of the freepers and to vindicate my friends. For three years now, we've been trying to convince the Bushistas that the evidence against Saddam was either slanted or fabricated. So this is the worst-case scenario--it was fabricated, and now we have proof: Bush and Blair are traitors!

So now they'll know it too, but whether they admit it or not is another thing. Those people are experts at denial!

13. I got this in an e-mail from a friend
It is an excellent statement on the motivation for the fabrication of a "casus belli".

I'm glad to see it's posted here and recommend the entire article to DUers.

I can't believe anyone in the whore media can read this and not think it's a story.

I can't believe this is still not in our urinestream media and it's absence only convinces me that we no longer have a free press engaged in open debate with the intent of educating the people.

It's hard not to think democracy is dead.
