Andy just called me from the aircraft...he has landed safely in Baltimore..he was still on the plane..and he asked me to post to you all ..that the first leg of his journey is complete...he is there and will see the doctor at John's Hopkins tommorrow morning...

He is very tired and will try to sleep today...

But more important he wanted me to post a Huge "THANK YOU " to you all...and he wanted me to tell you he loves you all here at DU!!

when andy has this surgery ..hopefully next tuesday..he will go from surgery to intensive care..icu...no flowers are allowed in icu units...and more important to andy..is please use that money to donate to paying the rest of this surgery..andy will not be able to work or get a job for a while after wards...
although flowers are lovely and the thought is sweet...i don't think he would mind me saying..being without worry of the bills..would be alot sweeter!!

Besides donating to the Andy recovery fund, if you feel you must do something special that will affect his care in a positive manner, consider getting together and sending a fruit basket or chocolates to the ICU nurses station as a thank you for all their hard work signed a Friend Of Andy. Nurses sometimes feel under-appreciated and are constantly in a high pressure environment, especially in an ICU, so I doubt it will impact the technical care he receives, (because ICU generally nurses take great pride in their work) it just may affect the bedside manner.

11. At some point, i hope Andy can have "private" medical treatment

As much as i wish him well and have contributed to his cause.
I don't find making his movements pubic, and the time he'll go under
anesthesia public to be at all sensible. He has a major personal battle
to fight between him and his own life... and letting the planet know
the details is toxic, and will not help Andy in the least.

Sometimes private battles are best fought in private. It does not
mean i do not support Andy, but rather that i DO support him, and his
need to keep his energy focused on his own battles, and nobody else.
He needs to face death alone, like we all do, and no matter that it
might feel vicariously good to wish him well. He already knows this.

Andy, it is not wise to braodcast your movements and general anesthesias
to the world, as all it takes is one person with dark wishes, and it
will affect your sensitive time. I hope that the rest of DU can
offer andy some privacy.

I think it's important to respect someone's self determination. Andy CHOSE to keep us updated and he is surrounded by LOVE.

He has reached out to his community and they have embraced him. It may be right for some to go through something like this privately, but if Andy feels it's right FOR HIM to share his experience and trust those who love him, I respect HIS choice.

Saying that one person with "dark wishes" may endanger him is YOUR personal belief. I do NOT hold that same belief. I believe in the power of LOVE from one's community, circle of supporters and friends.

The energy of the public internet can be very toxic in critical moments
of health, and it is wise to keep major surgeries private until they

If you were talking about a private circle of friends, we are in
complete agreement, but you are talking about a political party website
that has many enemies, some enemies less scrupulous than others, and
general anesthesia is a very sensitive time. It is unwise to
announce such things in public, as much as good friends and loved ones
are wishing him well.

to intentionally harm anyone. They make too much money and they are very vested in positive outcomes because many of them are as arrogant as it comes, but in this case, it works well. They are not going to have the 'B' team in on a highly specialized surgery like this: the high-caliber surgeon likely works with an exclusive set of anesthesiologists whenever he operates.


And the OR process from start to finish in a place like JHH won't be prone to strangers wandering around.

Western medicine is magnificent for trauma, like with a car accident,
as the treatment "fixes" the injury, an injury that happened in a few
seconds. Howver cancer and some other ailments come from long term
causes, that can develop over decades, not seconds. TO treat such
things with traumatic medicine works sometimes, and as well, the other
way of treating such things, is to correct the long-term affliction.

This can be diet, relationships, work, any number of things, and only
the person who's sick has the wherewithal to realize this... but
sometimes, when faced with death, people do exactly that. They decide
they want to live at all cost, and are willing to change ANYTHING to
be rid of an early death. And indeed, people can use a combination of
the best of traumatic medicine and long-term wholistic medicine to treat
what some doctors call "incurable cases".

Just because a culture has access to such healing techniques, does not
make them used. China is a very toxic country these days, and has
a government that does not believe in the human spirit at all. It is
hardly suprising that cancer and heart deseise are on the rise there.

Eastern and Western are metaphors for methodologies of approach, not
locations on the earth. Both approaches have their place.

THAT is why i wrote what i wrote, and no matter that a bunch of people
did not understand it; it has nothing to do with money.

Once an old woman lived near a desert wash where she knew there were a very
dangerous flash flood sometimes given the weather. Hikers and passers
by would often hike in the wash, often on days when the woman knew
better, and in her view, "got lucky" to avoid a flash flood.

One day, she helped someone who nearly drowned in a flash flood. The
person did not have medical insurance, and the whole town helped
the person get well. The whole town felt great about themselves
for helping the hiker. The old woman spoke up and said that had the
hiker not gone in to the gully during storms that could form a flash
flood, such incidents might be avoided in future.

The town was no aware that it was a flash flood area, and they spoke
harshly to the woman for being critical regarding the hiker they'd just
helped save. They claimed that were she selfless, she would do her
part in saving hikers and not dispense advise. They told her
to shove off, using a variety of reasons, from that she invaded
the hiker's privacy, to that she was wrong about flash floods, or
that she was wishing the hiker bad fortune. They did not trust
anyone who would say such a thing, and that everyone knew flash
floods were simply random and not something that could be avoided.

She told the hiker to beware of the gully nevertheless, as a
selfless act, and was berated by the town for it.

It is indeed difficult when there are so many expectations
about what a gift is.

63. Hmmm, that's a very good point.

Being let in on how he is doing AFTER the fact may not bring harm, but I would rather not know anything if it is going to endanger Andy's recovery. Last Monday night after my surgery, I was just a puddle of "leave me alone" with a dash of pain added to the mix. Since the surgery I've had several nightmares, most of which were in the vein of "I haven't had surgery yet and I feel terrible." After someone has been under the knife, they really aren't in the mood to talk and tell you about every little issue.

While on morphine there were times I felt I could have done a handspring, but not since. :) Someone's been in there drilling on my neck and I can tell. :) It gets better with each passing day.

OK, all I'm saying is that Andy needs to do what Andy needs to do to get better. If that means no news, I'm fine with that.

145. Johns Hopkins is a wonderful hospital.

It's a teaching hospital and research hospital. They are on the cutting edge of just about everything.
Once my grandmother was in another hospital. Her doctor came to see her while we were visiting her. He was a young man. After he left my mother asked her, Don't you think you should have an older more experieneced doctor? My grandmother told her, Hell no! I want one fresh out of medical school. That way he hasn't had time to forget anything. LOL
Well at Johns Hopkins they have older more experienced doctors working together with the younger smarter doctors and both of them never left medical school. They sure do have their bases covered. What Johns Hopkins is going to do for Andy is take that older more experienced arm and that younger smarter arm and wrap them around Andy and give him a healthy hug until he feels bettter. :grouphug:

I've been thinking about making a donation. But I'm kinda torn on that. I like to donate as much as I possibly can to Johns Hopkins so they will be there with something better for the next Andy. They are a wonderful hospital and I can't say that enough. You guys are doing well for him. He's lucky to have good friends like you guys. i was contacted early yesterday by a du'er ..i will not say her name ..for privacy,.she knows who she is!..and i passed the message on to andy..she offered any kind of help he could need or termite might need when termite gets there..well Andy asked for the lady to call him..so i passed that..and her husband called andy while i was on pm with her..long story short ..this wonderful family had andy over for what andy said was an incredible dinner..he loved it!! and this couple helped him get a real nice hotel ..so he could lay his weiry head down for the night!!

Andy told me the family was so wonderful...he said the husband was the greatest , and he said they had 3 of the most well behaved children he ever met!!
This family and du lady ( thank you sweetheart!) have offered any assistance to andy and termite , and she will be going in to visit andy in the hospital!!

Also last night another wonderful du'er pm'ed me and she will be going in for full visitation..she is a wonderful friend to andy..and she works at JH...so she knows the ropes..at JH..and she will be a frequent visitor !!

ya know...its not just about the money..it's about friendships and holding out a hand to others in need...its about this as i break out in song for those who have held out there hand to a stranger in most cases, ... many of you don't know andy..but you have all held out your hand to andy....

and slept from about 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. I hated to wake him, but we had to go get the rental car he needed to drive to Johns Hopkins. He looked so much better after his nap! To all of you DUers (and others), Andy is so appreciative of what you have done for him.

It was our pleasure. My husband and I were thrilled that he came.

As far as my kids go, they're great kids and we love them to death. But, they shocked even us with their behavior last night. I think they were so impressed that we invited Andy over that they decided to do their part too. When my oldest offered to take Andy's plate after dinner, my mouth dropped to the floor. Usually, we can't get him to remember to put his own plate in the sink, let alone anyone else's. :D

growing up used to shock us too.
We would be at a Doctor's office or resturant, anywhere and have them lined up setting there quietly and people would say "Your kids are so well behaved, excellent children!" We would say hmm, you see them at home ! (they are fooling you!)

Since many if us are subsisting as it is and since one way to donate to Andy is through PayPal, we could sell something that we really don't need on eBay and have the buyer send the money to Andy's account. We could donate the postage or we could accept the money in our PayPal account and then send it over to Andy's account.
