My HMO hates me. Yesterday was far from a success story. It took me roughly a year to get approval to get into the University of Miami's immune specialist. I waited 2 months while they supposedly were deciding if I was worthy or not after I had submitted my paper work and I waited nearly another 2 months to get an appt.

I was supposed to get bone marrow and cell testing done to determine what treatment we could do that might be effective and then do it, whatever it was.

After waiting several hours in an overcrowded lobby with some very seriously ill children (and adults, but the kids got to me) and having the man next to me go into a seizure, fall on the floor, foam at the mouth and finally just lay there; I finally got to see my long awaited specialist. I saw her for 15 minutes because she never reviewed my file, she did not know what to do with me, and so she sent me home so that I can follow up once my file was reviewed.

Now, in all of this process we have been starting and stopping chemo because we were worried that it might affect her tests. We have tried to keep me as untreated as possible, so in other words, we have waisted my time... mine. So now, after she reviews my files I will no doubt have to wait several more months to get yet another appointment. In that time, I will go untreated.

Now you might be thinking that I should try another specialist. Ah, but you see, my HMO will only cover this one and it took a year to even get them to agree to do so.

In other words, I have no options. In my same state, a dead woman connected through a feeding tube to some sort of lifeless existence got 10 million offered for her care. A dead woman, see? A dead woman got legal bills covered, specialists offering free help, hospitals in a frenzy. Even the governor and President took up the plight of this dead woman. I watched this all in horror because if they spent even a fraction, no, less than a fraction of that time or effort on my behalf, they would be helping a living person.

I think Conrad said it best: "the horror, the horror".

that just royally SUCKS! :hug: I'm so sorry you have to go through the HMO BULLSHIT. I know exactly what it's like. I went through a lot of crap with mine when I was diagnosed with Colitis. It is unfrigginbelievable that an insurance company can dictate what's best for the patient. <sigh> What has our country come to?

Of course the RW wackos threw money at a DEAD woman....they thought it would help their rabid religious agenda. :grr:

I went a bit nuts the other day, but I am okay about it all now. I don't think I want to keep waisting my energy on this. My time and energy can both be better used to address my health in ways, perhaps, that are alternative to the norm (if I can find the cheaper versions). The point is I don't really mind being sick as long as it leaves me alone from time to time. I don't know if this makes sense, but I have been sick for 9 years now, since I was 24, and so to me this is the norm. I don't know the difference. The only thing that bothers me is the level of pain sometimes, which can be blinding. The rest does not really affect my hopes and plans. I just pretend I don't live here (in my body). I have separated it into "you" and "me" where the latter part is "all of me" running around in my head, dancing flamenco, running off to a Portishead concert. The "you" is just luggage I carry around at this point. I know it sounds nuts, but honestly, I don't know how else to explain it. But it works in that I am not frightened or deflated. Okay, this is far too boring and depressing. Let's talk about something lively. My illness is a footnote. :)

Thank you so much for your kind words. I was thinking of writing a health book, but then Andy and I decided we wanted to do a book on faux politically caused illnesses. We are very odd, the two of us. His tumor and my marrow have decided to meet for martinis in June, Miami. There is another person attending this little drinking session who happens to also be a writer and who is also sick. I think too much font may be the problem;)

These are children with severe autism, C.P., M.D., Downs syndrome, genetic anomalies, etc. The diagnosis that comes to the families is like a death in the family.
