college baseball coach suspended for racist comments
it pains me that the guy in question represents my university, though I don't think he'll represent it much longer ...

(University of Oklahoma Head coach Larry)Cochell gave praise to freshman outfielder Joe Dunigan, a black student-athlete, during a pre-game chat with that night’s play-by-play commentator Gary Thorne, according to Josh Krulewitz, Director of Media Relations for ESPN.

According to an ESPN report, once Dunigan returned to the field, Cochell turned to Thorne and said, “There’s no n----- in him.”

Krulewitz said Thorne didn’t tell anyone until Friday morning when he discovered a similar comment had been made to analyst Kyle Peterson that same night.

According to ESPN, Cochell’s comment to Peterson was, “There are honkies and white people and there are n----- and black people. Dunigan is a good black kid.”

1. We've got a fire chief and a firefighter using the n word and pulling guns
and bringing out German Shepards on a black guy that was fishing in "their" Wisconsin town near Milwaukee.

3. I was pleasantly surprised to find
that most of the people on one of the sooner message boards (which is where i heard of this) agreed that it was racist. I mean, it's obvious to me, but I'm sure you're right that there will be plenty of deniers. And having lived in Oklahoma for the last dozen years, I fully expected to read plenty of it, especially on a sooner sports board.

Of course, there were those who said "he was trying to compliment the guy, he just phrased it poorly" and "he just grew up in a different age," but even most of those apologists agreed that he should have to resign.

I agree with you. It's definitely racism.

4. I'm sure he didn't mean anything bad by it
but you've GOT to know not to say that. I can't imagine thinking it would be OK to say that.

8. It certainly boggles the mind
He made two separate comments in two separate interviews, and apparently neither journalist thought much of it or at least considered it an isolated incident until they compared notes.

I can't help but wonder what he's said privately in the past that hasn't been reported.
