SAN FRANCISCO - California Attorney General Bill Lockyer dropped plans Thursday to run for governor, citing a wish to avoid the partisan attacks and heavy fundraising required to take on Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Lockyer said he would instead run for state treasurer.

The Democrat expressed confidence that he could have won his party's nomination for governor and is eager to see Schwarzenegger defeated. But, he told The Associated Press: "It's fighting with Democrats, fighting with Republicans. It's just fighting. And I'm fed up with partisan bickering."

Lockyer, who turns 64 next week, also said he wants to spend more time with his family, including a 22-month old son. Term limits prevent him from serving as attorney general beyond next year.

3. Angelides, I believe, has more or less announced his candidacy
He's a threat: the Associated Press shrieked, and I almost quote verbatim, "How can someone so ugly and lacking in charisma dare to oppose our Glorious Führer." As for me, Angelides looks like Law & Order's Steve Belzer, and he's staunchly liberal: he has all the numbers on Nipples's bad budget.
Rob Reiner is another possibility: Meathead vs. Meat.
