NEA chief confident on ‘No Child' lawsuit

By MARÁ ROSE WILLIAMS The Kansas City Star

The president of the nation's largest teachers union is optimistic that his group will prevail in its lawsuit against the federal government.

The suit, which the National Education Association filed last week, challenges the government for failing to fully fund the No Child Left Behind Act, which requires that all students perform at grade level in reading, math and science by 2014.

“I believe that we can be very successful in this lawsuit,” said Reg Weaver, national NEA president. “We are doing it for the right reasons: on behalf of the children, their parents and communities. And it would impact every school district and every student across the country.”

More important, Weaver said, is what the law says. “The language in the (No Child Left Behind) law is very clear. … If the federal government issues regulations and mandates, then it has the obligation to fund them.”
