My husband got a letter from the RNC yesterday
He is not a Republican. He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in December and has not yet registered to vote. He applied for citizenship last January and passed his test in May. He wanted to vote in the November election and was told he'd get his citizenship in time to register. Somehow, (wink, wink) his application was tied up in security checks and did not get cleared in time for him to vote. Why do I have the stinking feeling that they looked at how *I* was registered and THAT was the holdup?

So anyway, he gets this letter stating that he is a republican that has been chosen to fill out a survey. He takes out the survey and grabs a black sharpie and writes across the whole survey in clean block letters:

I am not a Republican.
I believe Bush is an idiot.
Take me off your mailing list.
NOW.

He calmly puts it in the post-paid return envelope. On the envelope are the words: "affixing your own 37 cent stamp will help the Republican party save money for other purposes. He circles this, and writes "bite me" under it and calmly puts it in the mailbox and pulls the flag up.

I laughed. I'm so proud.

3. He was actually upset
He kept asking me "why on earth do they think I'm a Republican?" He was appalled. But you should have seen the twinkle he got when he saw there was a post-paid return envelope.

5. Welcome
By the way, a welcome to your husband to America. We need to keep working to make it the country he thought he was coming to.

If you have a Democratic Representative or Senator, maybe you can ask them to look into how your husband got on a Republican list. I wonder if the Republicans are trolling official citizenship lists, and if that is legal.

2. Its a shame too....
Republicans didn't use to be insane religious fundamentalists bent on total neo-fascism that makes no sense. I mean, they used to have values and all parties had character, and they used to stand for the small companies.

4. Which State Are You In?
Somehow he filled out some form that got his name on the RNC radar. Age, race, nationality...something got a profiler's attention. That would be the fascinating thing to find out.

I'd love to see him play along with these goons...see how they pitch how the party represents his interests and square it with their hypocritical positions.

Cheers...

Playing along is not an option. He cannot stomach the thought.

7. They did the same thing to my daughter
when she first registered to vote at 18. She left the space blank under Party affiliation because she didn't want any affiliation. They registered her as a Republican. My husband is a Republican. Anyway, she was very upset about this, especially since she kept getting mail (even a glossy 5 x 7 picture of George and Laura) from the Republican Party. She joked she was going to use the picture as a dartboard in her dorm.

Last year when she applied for her absentee ballot to vote from college, she changed her Party affiliation. She registered as a Democrat.

10. I asked them to keep me on their mail list
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 06:57 AM by YusefHawkins
I took the postage paid envelope and filled it with some mail of my own. I think a little sand got in the letter too by accident. It definately weighed over two pounds no matter how hard I tried to get the sand back out. I did manage to keep the sand in a plastic bag so the postal carrier wouldn't have to deal with sand spilling everywhere. Figured since they were paying for the postage they wouldn't mind a few of my thoughts and a little sand bagging.

I didn't ask them to take me off of their mailing list. I asked them to keep it coming so I could do my part and keep tabs on their thoughts. Know your enemy. I also wanted more postage paid envelopes to return more of my thoughts. Hopefully no sand will get in the envelopes next time. I'll really try hard not to write back while sitting in the sandbox with my kids.

All this because I wrote my Republican Rep whom I did not vote for to voice my displeasure and make sure he sticks it to deLay.

I have text of the letter I'll scan it and post it.

Republican NATIONAL COMMITTEE
Ken Mehlman Senator Bill Frist Congressman Dennis Hastert Congressman Tom DeLay RNC Chairman Majority Leader . Speaker Majority Leader
Dear Fellow Republican,
You are among a select group of Republicans who have been chosen to take part in the official CENSUS OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.
Enclosed is your new GOP CENSUS DOCUMENT which was assigned and
prepared especially for you as a representative of all Republicans living in your voting district.
Registration #: XXXX-XXXX
voting-district Code: - XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Your answers will be used to develop a BLUEPRINT for the Republican Party for the next 10 years.
The 2000, 2002 and 2004 elections have all shown how critical it is that we identify and contact EVERY SINGLE POTENTIAL Republican voter in America to get them involved.
Because it is cost prohibitive for the Republican Party to print and
mail an official REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS to each and every one of the
55,000,000 Republicans nationwide.
. . . your answers will represent the views and opinions of all Republican voters living in your voting district.
So even if you are undecided about some questions; please complete your new GOP CENSUS DOCUMENT and return it to me in the next 7 days to ensure we get ample and accurate results.
protect our nation against nuclear missiles?
Should the inheritance or "death" tax be permanently repealed? And do you support President Bush's pro-growth policies to create more jobs and improve the economy?
Should we allow religious and charitable groups to do more to reduce poverty so those in need get the direct help necessary to get back on track? Or should the government be able to continue discriminating against faith-based organizations?
Do you favor balancing the federal budget by cutting wasteful
Over, please. . .

Page two
government spending?
Do you support the law, passed by the Republican Congress and signed
by President Bush, that bans partial-birth abortion?
Make no mistake -- without your answers to the REPUBLICAN PARTY
CENSUS DOCUMENT questions. . .
. . . our leadership will not know how you and other Republicans at the grassroots level of our Party feel about the critical issues facing our nation.
The Republican National Committee will be unable to develop a BLUEPRINT that will truly energize and unify our Party.
- ,-~
Without your answers, the RNC cannot fully create a campaign plan to organize and mobilize Republicans at the grassroots level of our Party. Most importantly, without your answers we will be unable to help President Bush win passage of his reform agenda in Congress.
Remember. the RNC is the only Republican Committee responsible for both the campaign strategy to maintain and expand our majorities in the
House and Senate during the 2006 mid-term elections and for helping enact the President's agenda.
Our margins are razor-thin. Liberal Democrats in the U.S. Senate can still kill almost any legislation that President Bush proposes and they can stop his appointment of judicial nominees. So real reform
depends on maintaining and expanding our Republican majorities in the House and the Senate. not just now. but over the next 10 Years.
And that starts with including Republicans like you in formulating our BLUEPRINT, then identifying, educating and turning-out Republicans on Election Day.
The last three national elections have been extremely close. In
2002, we came within a few thousand votes of losing the House and Senate to the Democrats and liberal special interests.
And I don't need to tell you how critical the get-out-the-vote
effort was to our Party in 2004, when President George W. Bush won re-
election by just 3%. ?
New Hampshire was decided by just 9,171 votes; Wisconsin by 11,813
votes and Pennsylvania by 128,869 votes out of 5,676,212 votes cast in the keystone state. In fact, if 60,000 votes had gone the other way in Ohio
in 2004 . . . John Kerry would be President today.
That's why your REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS DOCUMENT is so important. Next page, please. . .

Page three
It all comes down to old-fashioned methods of grassroots contact - phone calls, door-to-door canvassing, postcards and letters to likely Republicans.
Believe me, the Democrat Party is angry. The radical liberals are once again screaming that Republicans stole the election. And if you look at the facts, the Democrats set voter turnout records and fundraising records in 2004 as well.
There is no question, the Democrats will be back with a vengeance.
And historically the party in the White House loses seats in Congress in the off year. So you can bet the Democrats will be rejuvenating their deflated base for 2006 and for the 2008 presidential campaign.

People for the American Way, the Trial Lawyers and MoveOn.org, emboldened by their influence in 2004, are already filling their campaign coffers for 2006. Republican candidates at all levels will need the RNC's help.
So please don't delay in completing your official REPUBLICAN PARTY
CENSUS.
Based on your response, the RNC plans to print and mail a
REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS to 5.5 million Republicans so that we can get a statistically reliable sampling of our Party.
But at a cost of $.40 each, our CENSUS OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY will cost the RNC over $2.2 million.
So along with your completed GOP CENSUS DOCUMENT, won't you also enclose a contribution of $500, $250, $100, $50 or even $25 to the Republican National Committee?
Your gift of $500 will allow another 1,250 Republicans to take part
our follow -
party activists.
But more important, your contribution of any size will help the RNC unify~ our Party in advance of the 2006 and 2008 elections!
2004 was a watershed year. But it was only one year.
Republicans will lead the nation based on an agenda that represents your views. But we can only accomplish this goal if we maintain our
Republican majorities in the U.S. House and Senate and provide strong support for President Bush's agenda.
And with majorities in both the House and Senate and President Bush
Over, please. . .

in the White House. we've got more at stake- than ever.
Liberal special interests and some unions will continue to hire
hundreds of "professional activists" and put them in place in targeted congressional districts around the country. Working together with the radical environmentalists and ultra liberal groups, these organizers will set their sights on taking back Congress next year.
To counter these efforts. the Republican National Committee has already started working on our campaign Plans to protect our majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate.
We're targeting key precincts where we must rebuild our party and get each and every Republican to the polls.
This is why your GOP CENSUS is so important. We know the best way to energize Republicans is to have a strong agenda that reflects their concerns. And to do that, we need your help.
Won't you please:
1. Complete your specially registered REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS and return it to me today?
2. Enclose your most generous gift of $500, $250, $100, $50 or even $25 to help the RNC mail an official REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS to 5.5 million Republicans throughout the country?
Remember, your new GOP CENSUS is among the very first to be mailed. President Bush is counting on all of us.

Sincerely,
Ken Mehlman~
Chairman

P.S. It is important that I receive your completed REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS back in the next 7 days. Based on your answers, the
RNC will mail an additional 5.5 million GOP CENSUS DOCUMENTS
to your fellow Republicans in the next 4-6 weeks to unify and build our Party for the 2006 mid-term elections and beyond. Please do not delay in completing your new GOP CENSUS, and please make your most generous contribution of $500, $250,
$100, $50 or even $25 to help with our GOP CENSUS project. Thank you.

13. Last night at that press conference
a reporter asked if Bush was resposible for all the vitriol and party division in Washington. He answered some bullshit -- but what's with this letter? "Believe me, the Democrat Party is angry. The radical liberals are once again screaming that Republicans stole the election."

That makes it look as if they're calling the whole Democratic party "radical liberals." What the fuck? They have POISONED the discourse.

And we aren't even citizens.. :-)

We filled it, with our very, very, VERY liberal answers, we added a comment that were aren't citizens and therefore, can't vote, and sent it back.. :-)
