I just now realized the benefits of cable, I think.

Do people with cable get channels that don't carry Dubya?

I have this little b/w 13" TV the senior center gave me and I don't watch it much--I don't even have a remote for it. So, I was fixing something to eat and decided to turn it on. EVERY channel that I get (that's only 6 of them--the aerial on the roof isn't working, or I'd get FAUX News also, so I hope they never fix it) has the chimp on.

Not that I can afford cable anyway. But despite the wingnut takeover of the media, I somehow never understood that there was really only ONE channel, with slightly different programming. Anyway, after glancing at all 6 channels, I turned off the TV and I've now got Randi on the radio.

1. I don't know, but a DVD player is a good thing.
That Larry the Cable guy is pretty funny. ;)

4. Yes, I used to have one.

Having been homeless much of my life, I never had much chance to watch TV or go to movies, so references to movies and TV went right over my head. When I got a DVD player I signed up for 3 different DVD-by-mail clubs, and watched all the classics, and all the movies & TV series I'd wanted to see or that seemed interesting. Then I donated it to a kids' charity. Now I go to documentaries at the library and the ones shown by Indy Media nearby. The ones at the library are free, and Indy Media asks for $5 but doesn't turn anyone away. The DVD stores and rental places usually don't carry the new progressive documentaries I enjoy, so I'd have to buy them online in order to watch them. Between the library and Indy Media, I get to see most of them without having to buy them. And once or twice a year I go to a movie theater--but it takes a Michael Moore film or something almost as good to get me there.

5. Fabulous ideas!
I'm lucky and my library system also has an excellent documentary program.

2. Cable's not worth it
unless you have terrible reception. Better to watch your local PBS station or listen to NPR or Air America.
