Just got off the phone with my Dad
He just got back from Cuba. While landing at YVR he saw an Air Transat plane missing a tail rudder. The plane was coming up from Cuba to Vancouver when the rudder flew off... there was 230 aboard. They were over Louisianna whent the rudder blew off.
They requested an emergency landing in the US, but where told because the plane came from Cuba it wasn't allowed. So, they had to fly back to Cuba without a rudder (Which can be done).
230 people aboard. Man.

I'm fucking disgusted.
And with what Canada did for the US on 911.

3. When you say 'rudder' do you mean the vertical stabilizer?
I'm having a really hard time imagining a jet flying without a vertical stabilizer.

15. Well, there are three tail fins
The vertical stabilizer and two horizontal stabilizers. don't mean to pick this apart, and I have no doubt that Murkins turned them away from landing due to their 45 year snit with Fidel, but the plane won't fly with one of the 'tail fins' off.

Just curious from an aeronautical perspective.

5. No way!!
That's ridiculous. What were they afraid of, "Terra"? Or some Cubans trying to emigrate? Like a pilot pretended a plane was in distress to carry out some mischeif? Good grief.

7. Is that legal under the international aviation treaties? I always assumed
that under such emergency situations that exceptions were made for the safety of passengers....

Are you certain of this? I hope to find out more, but I always was under the impression that the international treaties would make exceptions in this kind of case...OH! That's right! My mistake...we have an administration that doesn't pay attention to international treaties and agreements! :spank:

Airbus Returns To Cuba After Partial Rudder Loss

By Mary Grady
Newswriter, Editor

An Air Transat Airbus 310 was about 30 minutes into a flight from Cuba to Quebec City on Saturday when the rudder became partially detached. The airplane returned safely to Cuba. Three other Airbus airplanes were grounded for inspection but returned to service after no problems were found. Reports that the Airbus was denied permission to land in Florida by U.S. air traffic controllers seem to have been false. U.S. controllers said they were never told about an emergency, and Air Transat said the crew chose to return to Cuba because they had maintenance crew there and were never refused permission to land in Florida. The aircraft involved was put into service in 1991. It had an inspection on March 1, and its next major inspection is scheduled for 2006, Air Transat said.

The captain chose to return to Cuba because he had access to maintenance facilities there.

24. I tend to find this a little tough to believe in that
the plane could have landed in Mexico, which should have been closer. I think if they asked to land and were denied the reasonable thing to do would be to ask Mexico to land, and they would have said yes. I think the employee was relaying a rumor which turned out not to be true.

28. Found a few articles about it
This one says it happened 25 minutes into the flight.

http://www.airdisaster.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-71606.html

On Saturday, an Air Transat Airbus 310 flying from Varadero, Cuba to Quebec City developed what the airline is calling a "mechanical problem" about 25 minutes into the flight.

I am no geography whiz but I would think turning back to Cuba would have been the best option.

new airplanes from Airbus. I'm glad DH got rid of the Boeing stock years ago. Sorry to hear how shabbily our crappy our government is treating our good friends in Canada, like Cuba is such a big threat now that the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore.

For my part, I am forever grateful for what you guys did for us after 9/11.
