Unbelievable Tom Delay quote.
This from the latest Johnathan Alter article:

"A couple of years ago, Tom DeLay was chomping on a cigar at a Washington restaurant with some lobbyists. The manager went over to tell him he couldn't smoke because the restaurant was located on property leased from the federal government, which bars smoking. "I am the federal government," DeLay replied, in words that will follow the onetime exterminator from Sugar Land, Texas, like ants at a picnic."

You can read the rest here. A good read as always from one of my favorite columnists.

5. Judge Dredd joke

Is it too late to photoshop Tom Delay as Judge Dredd saying "I *am* the law" or "I *am* the Federal Gov't"?

7. The article must be read to be appreciated
Jonathan Alter makes a good case for leaving DeLay in office and then let him drag the entire republican party down with him at the 2006 elections. Some repuglicans will have to scramble to distance themselves away from his policies, and might even allow for some Democrat-sponsored amendments to pass, etc.

DeLay's autocratic and extreme politics make a stench that will waft all across American, causing many of the republican moderates to bolt their party or to select more moderate party candidates during primaries.

8. Yes
Indeed, the quote itself is rich, but the article consumed as a whole far better of course. I like Newsweek.

If Delay was to step down now, his foul reek might be forgotten by 2006. That is the danger and gist of the article.
