Inventor Creates Soundless Sound System
Man Astounds Crowd in Oregon With His Soundless Sound Invention

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Elwood "Woody" Norris pointed a metal frequency
emitter at one of perhaps 30 people who had come to see his invention. The emitter -- an aluminum square -- was hooked up by a wire to a CD player. Norris switched on the CD player.

"There's no speaker, but when I point this pad at you, you will hear the waterfall," said the 63-year-old Californian.
And one by one, each person in the audience did, and smiled widely.

1. There's been a brainwashing device in every American home for 50 years!

4. I think you might "notice" hearing propaganda.
This is a way to focus sound on individual points. It's no different than any public sound system; it's just targeted. Useless for brainwashing, unless you were to pay someone to follow the target around and give subaural suggestions. However, that's a pretty iffy way of brainwashing. The only 'brainwashing' that's proven to exist is the good old-fashioned "break-and-rebuild" tactic.

7. if someone played (using this system) the lies of this admn-"you are safe"
"the economy is booming" etc.
just like the MSM chorus, it would have an effect on susceptible people.
Remember the so called Bin Laden tape right before Nov 2?

12. It only can target one person at a time.
It would be just like a PA system playing "you are safe," only it can only hit one pedestrian at a time. How is this useful for brainwashing?

13. And yet, even with that 'control' over the device...
...use of it by the Bush administration successfully convinced a majority of Americans that all sorts of lies were true (such as Iraq being responsible for 9/11, etc...).

In fact, dig out and read that old dog-eared McLuhan book, and you'd find that people are FAR more susceptible to 'brainwashing' via television than you'd think.

What teaches Americans how to dress, what to eat, what to drive, how to talk, what to buy, how to THINK? The TeeVee.

8. Directed sound.
I've been looking for a consumer application of this new technology for some time. This is really a big advance; stereos with this would just fly off the shelves.

I do see potential neferaious applications, but if it gets included in a consumer product, the effectiveness of this when used "against" someone would be greatly diminished, if not eliminated. Hey, if people know it's possible because they have a device that does the same thing, the "scariness" of "hearing voices" that nobody else hears is gone- one would simply assume it was someone playing with their new speakers.

I think we should just quietly let this happen so we can turn up the TV as loud as we like and not get a cop at the door for a noise complaint. And for games.... yaaaayyyy.....

14. For "election day"
how would it be different from having a PA system saying the same thing?

And as for "crazy"--it's not like people won't find out that this system exists when they start selling TVs and stereos equipped with it. They'd just think, "Some ass is targeting me with his goddamn boombox."

How would you know if someone is beaming "Republicans are compassionate" at your brain?
Esp. since the inventor is involved in repuke politics, gave money- did sound at the RNC in NY

18. My point is, doing so wouldn't be effective if people knew
it was possible because they have those same kind of speakers themselves.

They'll know what could be causing it, and will thus have an explanation to ascribe to what they are hearing and nobody else. The "boo!" factor is gone if people themselves have the same speakers.

16. I don't think you understand what this is.
It directs sound at an individual point. It's just like a stereo system, but it can only be heard at one point. That's all it is. It's not some thought-control device; it's not playing sound in your head. It's just the same as a stereo that nobody else can hear.

20. my man and I are arguing this with each other
He feels people could be somehow manipulated using this; I'm somewhat more of the opinion that it wouldn't be so possible. HOWEVER-

Due to the range of these devices, and how they work, I think they should be intentionally underpowered. I don't want someone pointing one of these into a busy street and randomly saying "Look out!!" through it, or someone saying something provocative into a volatile crowd situation.

It is a possibility.
