help!...HELP!...Drowning in Religion...!...
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 07:00 AM by mopaul
take me down to the river and dunk me under cause all this religion is drowning me. it's not my fault either, i'd just as soon not waste my breath discussing religion, but just try to do that these days.

you can't hide from it, and we know why. right wing hysteria, using the hyper religious among us to foment chaos and control. you can't avoid discussing it. it's in the news all the time, and it didn't used to be like this folks.

people just a few years back were not this hyper pious and preachy. this is a new development, this 'down your throatism'.

and i need a life jacket to save me from the oncoming tsunami of religious conflicts.

1. Did you read The Blog Box this week?
It's called "Faith Fatigue."

But it has nothing to do with the truly righteous, who try to live their lives according to their faiths and spread genuine goodwill.

Note: I compiled it.

8. It is hard to talk when people say they are right.
Then they are sure they are so right you also must do as they say. I think I came from a church that left 'The Church' because they thought that way. Back to the Rack I guess.

5. Mrs. Smith, we've enrolled Nancy in our Bible studies program o.k?
her knowledge of biblical tenets was way negative, and we just want to bring her up to the level of all the other kids, hope you don't mind.

6. Let us pray
O, ye drowning in the hands of the beast, thou art now being saved! Listen not to thine noodle, lest Jesus strike thee down! Heathen! Blasphemer! Ye shall sit in heaven if ye be true to ye savior! Speak not ill upon Jesus! Thine will adore the light!

Or something...

7. Remember how this started
under Reagan? I remember then being upset about it and that was nothing compared to this. It has been bothering me since then and now it is so annoying that I just have to walk away since there is no amount of reasoning to stop them. They do not care that you do not want to talk about it. It has become so bad that they will follow you getting louder as you go. I have no patience with it at all.

9. reagan is the pinpoint in time when the holy rollers ascended to power

13. amen, sister!
i felt the same when reagan reigned. scared me. deluded myself when clinton took office that it was over & sanity had returned.

i was dead wrong. it IS worse now, & increases daily. i can't even watch the local news anymore; there's a guaranteed dogma lesson in every local broadcast.

i've had to refuse to speak to my neighbors. EVERY civilized exchange about the weather, or the state of the lawns; everything became an excuse to bring up their god-fixation.

i really can't take anymore of it.

19. Hey jukes!
It is so sad. TV, radio, neighbors, friends, relatives. Yikes.

I can't take it either. I always was told that it was a personal relationship.

I don't want to talk about it with anyone and find myself having to be rude and I don't like being rude but it is far preferable to listening to someone who wants to convert me.

10. Sound and fury signifying . . .
The religious right is coming to the end of their enormous power, and even with all that power, and controlling all three branches of government, they aren't able to get what they want done. The Religious right aren't getting more powerful, they are getting less powerful. SO they rage all the louder to convince you and the media and everybody that they are more influential than ever. But it's not true.

11. even formerly sane folk are feeling "emboldened"
my boss has always been a strong christian. used to be a logical intelligent man as well, but now is a hardcore rightwingnut for god... says we should bomb the Iraqis into dust rather than let another good soldier die - this from a man who never served - and when asked about that pesky "Thou shalt not kill" he claims it doesn't matter because Iraqi's aren't christian...

he has also become quite strident about how he is glad that america is finally turning to god in our political arena. When asked about which FLAVOR of god is the right one - ie: what if (gasp!) THE chosen religion of the american taliban turns out to be Baptist and not Episcopalian? Or- heaven forfend - Catholic - what then? Would he still feel the same if HIS religion is not the big winner?

it is very odd, he tells me that the whole "freedom of religion" and "separation of church and state" stuff are garbage. he claims he has a higher boss telling him to convert the masses to his brand of salvation.

frightening.

15. i can hear you.....
maybe a good reply to someone preaching at you is "talk is cheap- DO the walk"

there's a terrible country western 'christian' song that has a really appropriate message "I'd rather SEE a sermon, then to hear one" anyday-

Most folks who 'talk' about how good they are do so, (i fear) because they are trying to convince THEMSELVES- it's the quiet, steadfast folks that don't look for accolades that 'speak loudest' to me- and usually don't 'quote' anything- or need to control others to feel 'right'.

16. Have you seen the top 10 list of names for this year?
1. Habbukuk (Redneck calls this one Buck)
2. Haggai (Don't want this one shortened--could be mistaken for one of them gays)
3. Malachi
4. Leviticus (call him Levi for short--rednecks like that)
5. Obadiah
6. Ezra
7. Hosea (Don't mistake that with "Jose"--rednecks don't want anyone to think they illegal)
8. Nehemia (We shorten this to Nehi--sounds good with Levi)
9. Zechariah
10. Zephaniah

:sarcasm:

This is my creation...not to be confused with the actual survey:)

18. Tell, them to leave you alone. That's what I do and
they usually do. If they pursue it, I pull out the artillery and then they leave me alone. It may work better for an old woman though than a man.
