I did not know that Hitler was Catholic and as a youth he was an altar boy. This shocked me, thought he was an antheist. Guess we learn something new everyday.

1. Why did you think he was an atheist?

2. There has been a big effort to make him out as an atheist or occultist...
in the media.

Not that shocking, I guess.

5. I don't know what made me think he was an atheist but
was surprised to read he was a Catholic. He did not practice Catholism in adult life, that is not excuse for his behavior. Perhaps I thought he was an antheist because this what I grew up to believe. Just shocked!

3. I was raised Catholic, was an altar boy, and I'm agnostic.
Your point is?

8. Same here. There is a difference between agnostics and religion haters.
Ignore the haters...

9. Thanks, it just seems there are a lot of people lately
Who just can't respect other people's beliefs, even if they don't agree with them.

4. Wrong wrong wrong.
Hitler might have been born a Catholic, but even a crusory reading of Hitler's own table talk and the actions the Nazis took against the Catholic Church (all churches, really) leads one to the conclusion that he did not practice it or adhere to it (he found Christianity weak). He and Goebbels attempted to get themselves excommunicated in the 1920s, but as they had no celebrity in Germany at that time, the Church took no notice.

10. Hitler was supported by the Catholic Church
Hitler was definitely Catholic. I think it is more comfortable for many Catholics and other Christians to tell themselves that he was not genuine in his beliefs or that it is somehow a myth because such a monster could never have come out of a church. (Basic knowledge of history significantly undercuts that argument) A large part of Hitler's hatred of Jews stemmed from his belief that they had murdered Jesus.

He was also a great admirer of Martin Luther for his own denunciation of Jews: "The Jews deserve to be hanged on gallows seven times higher than ordinary thieves," and "We ought to take revenge on the Jews and kill them."

"I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews. I am doing the Lord's work." - Mein Kampf

Gott mit uns (God with us)

"I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so." - Adolph Hitler, 1941, to Nazi General Gerhard Engel

Full disclosure: My family is Catholic, I am an atheist. O8)

17. There is also a rumor that there was a Jewish ancestor in
his family as well. This could pose an interesting question as to why he had self-loathing if this was true. In "Mein Kampf" he wrote that because the authority of the Catholic Church was not in Germany, that it didn't have Germany's best interests at heart.

He did three things he did before he died that would not paint a picture of a practicing Catholic. He married Eva Braun in a civil ceremony and he killed her with poison and shot himself, three acts the Catholic Church would say would send you straight to Hell.
