no kidding. my mouth is about hanging open here. i am so dreadin seeing miller. thinking man, why. hubby says josh lots of repugs on stewart of late. (AND THEY HAD AN EXCELLENT SKIT ON HARVARD, BUSTING UP) anyway. miller is talking the pope. is a catholic, says i go into confession and say you first. he sits up to talk about gays and the catholic church and he says, hey, i know everyone thinks i am a right winger because i support bush on this war but i am a libertarian all the way. and then went into some talk on leaving the gays alone and catholics have to do something about that.

well, i dont like bush, and i dont like millers support of bush, i use to like miller, but tonight, i did enjoy miller

am i a traitor

Not funny at all. Just retreads of old bits.

I was disappointed that Jon didn't question him, but Miller hardly shut up.

I do, for one. I'm so tired of these self-centered, smug assholes thinking that because their idea of the great outdoors is a free-form pool in the islands, that no one else cares about it. Fuck you, Miller. I'm so sorry anyone found anything he had to say tonight funny.

5. I've never liked the guy
before OR after he went nuts.

Tonight, he just seemed really loud, as if increased volume would somehow make what he was saying funnier. And they were really obvious jokes, too--no real creativity, IMO. I don't know, I like subtle humor. The man doesn't appeal to me.

12. Misinformed and arrogant...
His humor evaded me tonight. His act as if he is in the know, as if cynicism is a acceptable guise for lack of wisdom. Oh isn't it funny... no one knows anything and it is all just a pile of crap. As Shakespeare has said "The fool knoweth he is a wise man, but the wise man doth know he is a fool."
His humour reeks of ...listen to me, I really know what the right answer is. Just give up and shake your knowing head at these fools.
I have no appreciation for lack of empathy or insight and I am quickly losing patience with those who portend they are in the know when it is is just simple misguided apathy that leads them in their outcrys.

Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 05:59 PM by utopiansecretagent
Stewart was trying very hard (as evidenced by his forceful laughter at every one of Miller's lame punchlines) to LOOK amused. But he really looked bored and annoyed. Especially since he couldn't get word in edgewise.

Stewart's miles above Miller and both knew it. Miller acted nervous and even half-jokingly revealed his true envy at Stewart's success. Tried to backpeddle his Bush-brownnosing and make excuses ("Uh, I'm really just a liberatarian across the board...").

Testing the wind, yes.

Miller can go fuck himself.

38. Hmmm... wide brush there
I'm a small "l" libertarian, and porn IS legal... and indeed the war
on drugs is a war against the poor, minorities and the disenfranchised.

libertarian people are not for wars, corporate doles, corporate
congresses and all that stuff. Theres something to it, a sort of
conservatism that is quite decent next to the worst abuses of the
repuke regimes... just because dennis miller has diahorrea of the
mouth... we needn't use such a wide brush.

41. What I'm describing is not the dictionary definition of liberatrian.
However, it is the type of person I have met and known OVER and OVER again. Couldn't give a damn about helping their fellow man, but they don't ant the government butting into people's personal lives. I don't have a problem with the second part, but the first part is a major problem for me.

Miller and Bill Maher are good examples of this mindset, but it does seem pretty common among male comedians.

others to help your "fellow humans," you just don't want a large, impersonal, corrupt and wasteful bureaucracy to do it. Particularly if the ladder that you've built up in statism can be stolen by right-wing asshat loonies to climb their way to fascist heaven.

The weird thing about being a libertarian is that you have to tolerate other libertarians that you don't like. Weird, eh? Hayek and Mises, the best and most level-headed of the right-leaning libertarians knew it. Unfortunately, today, "libertarian," as you said -- means winger who wants to smoke pot. No tolerance for the liberals or the libertines, no matter how much they don't like them/us.

They want to beat us bloody with a cross and make us join in their statist, authoritarian "libertarianism."

***edited to say -- one half of them want to beat us bloody with a cross -- the other half want us to be neo-liberal market worshipers and aspire to be human capital.

14. I had always thought he was intellligent and good with words until
I heard him speak about the war and how he defended the right wingers so much before the elections. It would've been different if he would've been that way all along and knew where he was coming from. It's like, all of a sudden he just jumped into the mainstream media and was given his own show on cnbc just for speaking out for the war and to ridicule anyone against Bush's policies or campaign. I can no longer respect him no matter how much he tries to make me laugh. I can't. If that's his true self then I don't like him. he should've kept those views to himself. To come out right before the elections like he did is unforgiveable. He knew what he was doing and he knew it was his chance for some extended popularity and money when he was fading out of the limelight. Sold out!

He’s kicking up support for his CNBC show that must be in danger of being cancelled. Otherwise, I can’t imagine why he would appear on TDS.

He’s a comedy whore. He went after a slice of the market that he thought was in favor and instead he got sliced. You can’t pretend to be passionate. Even worse, you can’t pretend to be funny. To attempt both as Miller has done, you will only end up as a shallow, transparent prick.

Then, I went to PBS' Scientific American Frontiers. Global warming and the Atlantic Thermohaline pump. Bad shit.

Miller didn't seem funny at all anymore.

Jon really doesn't make up the comedy on his show... he just lets the politicians write the show. All TDS really does is show it to us.

Guys like Miller just use clever phrases to rant about stuff with no basis in fact.

27. Dennis Miller is not a Libertarian.
I once heard him on a radio show where he was asked about how he voted in the past. He said he was a registered independent.

When asked about not being able to participate in primaries, Miller was caught off guard and stumbled. It not only became perfectly clear that he had no idea what a primary was, but that he had never voted in his life. I suspect this still holds true.

I think Miller could swing back over to our side. Unfortunately, many libertarians supported Bush this time around, which I think is absolutely insane! I think the actions of the hardcore religious right recently would turn off most true libertarians. The right wing might be in the process of hanging themselves!

It was no surprise to me that he flipped his persona from hip-lib to traitor. I thought he was a phony, smug, arrogant asshole when he was at the top of his game. He now represents the quintessential ugly American. He and the Chuckler in Chief are two of a kind. They have no soul left to sell. In an exquisite balance between irony, reality and humor, Dennis Miller once said, "Why hate someone based solely on the color of their skin when if you took the time to get to know them you could find much more tangible reasons to loathe them as a human being?"

Now THAT is a priceless observation. I guess blind pigs really do find acorns every now and again.

40. The whole thing was sad
Jon Stewart was Ed McMahon on his worst day. And as for Miller, his comment about him being viewed as right-wing but he's "really a libertarian" (the usual excuse) signaled we've arrived at the O.J. Simpson Center for Image Rehab.

I guess I look for comedians to be equal opportunity. If you bash Clinton and Bush, that's fine, as long as the material is good. But to bash one at the exclusion of the other in your jokes smacks of ignorance.

Seeing that TDS made me really appreciate Johnny Carson's talent. No one would have known he was a liberal (as Peter Lassally stated on Franken's show) which made him able to tell jokes for both sides.

I used to really like Miller. Thought he was much better than Chevy Chase at Weekend Update and I still have his Off-White Album. Nowadays, he just damaged goods. Good thing he sat up straight last night in order to hide the fork in his back.

The chess and checkers player analogy is right on except that you want the chess player when you're fighting a complicated enemy. You can't just take reckless actions with no thought and expect to defeat terrorism because they don't really give a shit how strong you are.

He's right, foreign policy is the most important issue. The trouble is that he's way on the wrong side of it.
