Obama Bitch-slaps Bush at Lincoln Museum dedication
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 07:29 PM by Radical Activist
I went the dedication of the Lincoln Presidential Museum today. It was obvious that much of Obama's speech came in the form of criticizing Bush by naming all the positive qualities Lincoln held that Bush is lacking. I haven't seen any of the articles I've read even mention those portions of his speech. Bush was there to hear Obama speak, but I doubt he got the message. Here's part of the transcript and a link to what Obama said.

http://obama.senate.gov/blog/050419-opening_of_the_abraham_lincoln_presidential_library_and_museum/index.html#more

And yet what separates Lincoln from the other great men has to do with something else. It's an issue of character that speaks to us, of moral resolve. Lincoln was not a perfect man, nor a perfect president. By modern standards, his condemnation of slavery might be considered tentative; his Emancipation Proclamation more a military document than a clarion call for justice. He wasn't immune to political considerations; his temperament could be indecisive and morose.

And yet despite these imperfections, despite his fallibility...indeed, perhaps because of a painful self-awareness of his own failings, etched in every crease of his face and reflected in those haunted eyes...because of this essential humanity of his, when it came time to confront the greatest moral challenge this nation has ever faced, Lincoln did not flinch.

He did not equivocate or duck or pass the challenge on to future generations. He did not demonize the fathers and sons who did battle on the other side, nor seek to diminish the terrible costs of his war. In the midst of slavery's dark storm and the complexities of governing a house divided, he kept his moral compass pointed firm and true.

It serves us then to reflect on whether that element of Lincoln's character, and the American character - that aspect which makes tough choices, and speaks the truth when least convenient, and acts while still admitting doubt - remains with us today. Lincoln once said that "character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."

At a time when image all too often trumps substance, when our politics all too often feeds rather than bridges division, when the prospects of a poor youth rising out of poverty seem of no consequence to the powerful, and when we evoke our common God to condemn those who do not think as we do, rather than to seek God's mercy for our own lack of understanding - at such a time it is helpful to remember this man who was the real thing. Lincoln reminds us that our essential greatness is not the shadow of sophistication or popularity, or wealth or power or fleeting celebrity. It is the tree that stands in the face of our doubts and fears and bigotries, and insists we can do better.

Today we come to celebrate not a building but a man. And as that man called once upon the better angels of our nature, so is he calling still, across the ages, to summon some measure of that character, his character, in each of us, today.

8. That would not have been appropriate.
They were there to honor Lincoln, and getting too political would have been disrespectful to the crowd and the occasion. Saying as much as he did was pushing it.

51. Oh, come on. What do you want?
First off, he's a Freshman Senator.

And second, it would have been in poor taste to start trashing Bush at this dedication. Why on earth even bring up Bush at all?

Obama has something that Bush does not: class.

9. regardless of how folks
have besmirched Lincoln's character of late. . .

His second inaugural speech was profoundly inspiring. . .

"with charity towards all and malice towards none. . ."

http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/presiden/inaug/lincoln2.htm

Would that it were that such profoundly eloquent speakers existed now in our culture when we need them the most.

Instead it's a soul splitting "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah."

So glad I've turned off the tube of late.

10. That speech is sobering. We haven't had a great leader in a long time.
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 07:43 PM by Selatius
It seems the only way anyone can win the office of president nowadays is to sell out to the financiers, the bankers and industrialists of this country who hold the majority of wealth in this nation. It seems anyone who fights for change is either defeated or, worse yet, killed.

Oh well, I don't bother with that stuff anymore. That kind of power will only continue to attract the worst of society.

23. To be honest, I dropped Clinton when he signed NAFTA
There was very little to no provisions in that article of paper protecting the environment, not to mention protecting workers from exploitation. It was simply something negotiated by business interests with little or no input from citizens and citizens' groups and environmentalists. It was a tragic piece of legislation.

32. There were a lot of things Clinton did that
I disagreed with, but in spite of that, I believe he really wanted to be our president and for the right reasons. He never forgot he was working for us. And he never stopped working.
Maybe I could dismiss him if he had left with no regrets or showed no remorse for his mistakes. But every time he speaks I am reminded of his humanity.
But again, that's just my opinion.

43. I just felt that I didn't have to watch the White House
EVERY SINGLE day when Clinton was there. I knew he'd do the best he could, even though I didn't agree with NAFTA or the Tele Communications Act. I didn't even bother to watch the Impeachment Hearings. And I still haven't read the "Starr Report". But, he was dealing with a Republican controlled House and I still don't "believe" Clinton is a progressive - I think he's a wonderful politician and still the most charismatic person I've seen in my life time. Right now, I just miss him!

Shrub, on the hand . . well, what can I say? He and Cheney and Rove just don't seem to give a fuck about anyone except their uber rich cronies.

Now, I have to watch C-Span for real news and look to DU for other input.

<sigh>

It was heartbreaking to watch as that pack of hyena's shredded him for ratings. So the behavior of the media now comes as no great surprise. I do believe the few "real" journalists left out there also miss President Clinton.

pummeled Clinton over, essentially, nothing while they go so far the other way in absolutely ignoring all the EGREGIOUS things that have gone down since that scum * stole office.

I have no doubt that there are many millions of Americans who are fed up to the TEETH with the * crime family. Who would kick that bastard out of office quicker than you could say "penitentiary" if they had the power.

"sigh"

Obama is not perfect, but he is a reminder of the kind of person one would be proud to have representing this country.

I believe they will try to destroy him the same way they did Clinton.
I only hope we don't allow them to do it again.

This part really sticks the knife in (obviously Bush didn't get it, but I'll bet Rove did)
