A letter written to the Cast by our President.
April 18 - A legacy of caring for the environment
One of the many things I love about being a Cast Member is the opportunity to contribute to the outstanding legacy of our company's founder, Walt Disney. Although I never got to meet him, the more I've learned about Walt over the years, the more I've been amazed at what a true visionary he was.
As we get ready to celebrate Earth Day this week, I've been reflecting on Walt's vision with regard to the environment. Today, we know it's important to take care of animals and the environment. But more than 50 years ago, Walt already was making major strides in this area. His vision resulted in some of the very first nature documentaries, the Disney's True Life Adventures film series, and animated films like Bambi, which shared important conservation messages. Walt also personally appeared in many public service announcements, cautioning people about threats to the environment and animals like pesticides and forest fires.
We have continued that tradition here at the Walt Disney World Resort, where passion for the environment and animals is part of our culture and where we strive to take actions that make good sense for the environment and for business. As you know, the original purchase of the land for the Walt Disney World Resort was founded on this legacy, with over one-third of the resort set aside as a conservation area.
In 1998, fittingly on Earth Day, we achieved a major environmental milestone with the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom. This park, along with the Living Seas at Epcot and other areas across property, continues our legacy by inspiring millions of Guests each year to care for wildlife and wild places. As we celebrate Earth Day this year, on Friday, April 22, let's take the time to celebrate our environmental successes, recognize Cast Members who are making a difference, and renew our commitment to build on Walt's legacy of inspiring our Cast and Guests to care for the environment and animals.
Environmentality has many dimensions. This year we want to concentrate on three aspects: conserving energy, minimizing waste (in other words — reduce, reuse, recycle) and promoting safety with native wildlife. Throughout the year, you'll be hearing more about what you can do in these areas, both at work and at home.
To put Walt's passion for the environment and animals in his own words: "The natural beauty of America is a treasure found nowhere else in the world. Our forests, waters, grasslands and wildlife must be wisely protected and used."
It's our privilege, as Cast Members, to continue Walt's legacy.
