Rant: What White Men Have Taught Me or: Why I'm Now a Racial Profiler

Today, another white man made me cry. I didn't cry in front of him. Or shake. Or scream. Or act fearful. That was what he wanted.

Yes, that was what he craved when he tried to intimidate me. That's what he wanted when he threatened and harassed me.

I could say, "That's what all white men want," but it wouldn't be true. I know some really awesome white men who treat women as they would want to be treated themselves. And I am aware, from my black and hispanic sisters, that men of other races love to intimidate and harass women as well, but in my exprerience, the overwhelming majority - in fact, virtually ALL - of the humans who have hurt me on this planet in my 46 years of living on it are white men. Virtually all.

And why are these guys so goddamned arrogant? Oh, I know women who use this arrogance to their advantage. Unlike I, who say, "How does any mere mortal male get the idea that he IS the center of the universe?" these females stroke that ego, tell the man "Oh yes, Ralphie dear, you ARE the only true man on the planet. You really ARE better than all other men combined!" and then they get jewelry and their bills paid or whatever.

Not me. I call crap like I see crap. I've raised six kids, sent a kid off into two war zones, had knives held to my pregnant belly, been choked, knocked out with more than a few punches and walked around covered head-to-toe in the middle of a Georgia summer so no one saw all the bruises. Think you can scare me? Please try.

I believe in getting along with others. I try to be helpful and generous with my neighbors. I show compassion to children and the elderly. I got some therapy so I would not end up a bitter, angry person.

Lately, I have been driving a sports car until my own car's brakes are fixed. Now, for some unknown reason white men in big trucks and/or with W'04 stickers have a particularly vile reaction to a small little old woman driving a nice sports car. They tailgate, try to race me ( up a mountain, no less- had one guy blow up his motor that way and i just laughed as I cruised on), give me dirty looks, refuse to let me pass. I try to get away from them as often as possible. This country is full of psychopathic fucks and I try to stay away from them when I think one is sharing the road.

A few weeks ago, on a stretch of road in a Fascist red county here in middle Tennessee, I was stalked by one guy in a huge truck. My crime? As I passed him I made a gagging motion (open mouth, finger aimed toward throat) upon seeing the W'04 stickers. I do it all the time. No one has EVER noticed. I do it for me, not to get a reaction. Well, this particular man happened to notice - staring at me instead of the road ahead of him ( ohh, she's passing me!)- and he began to stalk me down the four lane like a psycho, shooting two birds at one time, getting on my left and right. No matter where I was, if I slowed down or sped up, he was there to make an evil face and all his obscene gestures. I finally turned the opposite way and never saw him again. But now I'm more careful of what I do when one of my sons isn't in the car. I mean, come on, don't all men get off on trying to scare the bejeezus out of a five foot women who weighs 100 pounds? I should know this stuff.

Today, I was on the same stretch of road in the same Fascist Red county. A jeep with a white male driver hauling a new TV in the back was in the fast lane doing 65, I was in the slow lane doing about 60. A car got behind me so I passed jeep so they wouldn't tailgate. They went on and I was pretty much side-by side with the Jeep. Up ahead, a slow semi was pulling out. Since I'm in the faster car, i go to pass jeep, intending to go around truck and then get in right lane again. I was not aggressive or going much faster than jeep and clearly I wouldn't have been slowing him down. Since he was doing 10 miles over the speed limit himself I figured he wouldn't have any moral objections.

I was wrong. AS I cleanly got in front of him ( gave him plenty of room, etc) he flashes a siren. I jump a small hair but I had a vehicle with a siren once too so big whoop. Any asswipe can buy one. I start wondering if dude is some kind of psycho posing as a police officer. Maybe the new Tv will get better reception of his snuff porn? Hell, as soon as I pass the truck I get in the right lane and here he comes, whizzing by at 70mph.

I do my little limp-wristed wave like a mama saying "move along" ( and I always say "get on witcha bad self" as they fly by, but no one can hear me- just my saying when some fruitcake has to be the fastest thing out there). This is a WAVE, people. Not obscene or threatening. A little woman WAVING.

So, he backs off the high rate of speed, gets behind me and flashes the blues. I am so annoyed, I have no time to be pissed. I am also scared. I pull up far ahead where there are people because this could be a real psycho but then again maybe not. As he pulls up, I start thinking, "Wait a minute. This asshole was going faster than I was! All I did was wave him past, which he should not have even noticed if he was watching the road like safe drivers do. I surely wasn't looking at HIM."

So I demand ID before I'll roll down the window. He flashes it real quick so I don't see his name. He's a fucking INVESTIGATOR!!!!!

So I say, "You pulled me over because I waved at you? You are wasting my taxpayer dollars to pull over someone who waves at you?"

WHITE MALE: "NONE of your tax dollars pay me! ( frothing at mouth).

ME: "Excuse me? I drop a lot of money in this county" ( just bought all my farm feed and more fencing there. Surely I know that sales tax revenues also fund law enforcement. Duh.)

WHIE MALE: "Well, you just take those dollars back up to ( my) County."

ME: "Well, after this, I guess I will. I mean, I can't believe you pulled me over because I waved like this ( did little wave).

WHITE MALE: "You were doing 65 in a 55."

ME: "And you were doing the same and more. Oh, I see. YOU get to speed. I don't. I understand now. What is your name again?"

WHIE MALE: " I am fixing to take you to jail."

ME: "I don't really care." I go to find my license. Now, I really do care, but there are horror stories about their jail and I just said to myself, "I'll have an insider view to do an expose."

He refuses to show me his ID or tell me his name. I refuse to show him mine til he shows me his. He finally tells me his name.

ME: "That's all you had to do." I hand him my ID. "I will be writing a report about you, sir."

He takes my license back to his vehicle to run the number. I grab a notebook and begin documenting date, time, name, road. I ask permission to go behind his vehicle. He ignores me so i go back there and take down his number. This whole thing is absolute bullshit.

He comes back to the car and sees I'm writing. He looks perplexed. I'm a formidable enemy when I'm right.

ME: "May I ask you a question?"

WHITE MALE: "Go ahead."

ME: "You've got men out there abductiong and molesting babies and people cooking crank and you are going to spend your time going after a woman who WAVED at you?"

WHITE MALE: "You'd be surprised. People who act like you a lot of times are cooking crank."

ME: (Incredulous but not gonna let it get a rise out of me. I'll give him the same in a moment) "That's a stretch. So, anyone who waves you past is a crank dealer. Wow!"

WHITE MALE: "Well-"

ME: "Your Chamber of Commerce may want to know how you've treated me-"

WHITE MALE: "I don't care about the Chamber of Commerce." He spits the words out.

ME: "I am acutely aware of that. In fact, you don't give a damn about anybody but yourself, do you? You OWN the road and nobody better disrespect you, eh? You're just like the pimps in downtown Atlanta ( his jaw has dropped all the way to the gravel now. I told you I'd get even for the crank cooker comparison!). "Yeah. that's right. That's how a pimp acts: 'Don't dis me or I'll make your life miserable.' Good for you buddy. Waste your time here."

WHITE MALE: "I have never issued a ticket in my life, but..."

ME: "Get on with it, buddy. Won't bother me. You report me, I'll report you and we're even." I look up, waiting for my ticket.

He THROWS my license at me.

AS he walks back to his car I tell him he needs to spend more time catching baby rapers. He'd feel better.

Then I went home and cried, because of all the unsolved murders of babies and women and men that go unsolved because investigators have time for this shit but none to solve crimes.

I know what's wrong with America: White Males are OUT OF CONTROL. And from now on, with apologies to the good white males, I'm going to assume they are all arrogant, wasteful, cruel, asshole bullies.

All white men will be suspect. All of them.

next to him. I was in the slow lane. I never tailgate, i rarely speed. I am a safe, courteous driver. I was attemptimg to pass because a semi was pulling out a quarter mile ahead. The gold jeep refused to let me pass and HE WAS SPEEDING!!!!!!!!!!!! I sped up and passed him cleanly, never cut him off, made any gesture, just driving safely so the truck could pull out.

I immediately pulled over to the slow lane once past the truck and was doing the speed limit when HE PASSSED ME AT 70 MPH.

But I can help you with the asshole tailgaters. What you need is some real iron, something like, oh a 1949 Desoto, or bette yet, a 1965 Chrysler New Yorker. Solid steel I-beams entirely surrounding the passenger compartment, including the doors. Real, dense iron and steel, guaranteed to go through any post 1975 car, truck or SUV like a hot knife through butter. I've found that people have a lot of respect for old iron, and tend to stay far away from it, even in the heavy urban traffic, where everybody else is bumper to bumper.

I know sportcars are a blast, I love them myself. But sometimes you just have to get out the serious assault vehicle.

As far as white males go, I don't know what to tell you, I think most of them are fucking asses myself, and I am one. I've still and yet been able to come up with a solution, other than a thorazine dart gun, and that's only a temporary fix.

like seeing bitterness (from the very beginning of your post) toward a whole class of people (in this case white males).

I have had one or two bad experiences with people--but I certainly would never write off the entire group that they belong to.

I once had an African American woman who was the absolute worst teacher that I ever had (third grade) I hated her--we all hated her--she was mean and nasty and unfair. But I didn't hold it against her--and years later I found out that she truly was a nice person--but that the year she taught my third grade class she was going through a nasty divorce--so she was angry and unhappy all the time. I made peace with her. I am certainly glad that I did not grow up hating all African American women!

I would advise you to distrust anyone who has given you a GOOD reason to not trust them (if a man has beaten you--you do not EVER give him another chance to hurt you). But--it is VERY important to have an open mind to people you do not know--no matter what their color, race, religion, or sex--give them a fair chance--see what they are about BEFORE you distrust them.

The fact that many on this post are telling me to be some subservient, flat affect human to avoid any confrontation tells me that my ending statements in the OP weren't that far off target. The wonderful thing is, part of my tears were tears of relief. it has taken many years struggling with PTSD to get to a place where I could argue logically with an asshole in the midst of trying to deny me me rights ( Uh, you can't have them. i'm not done with them yet!). iN THE PAST, A CONTROL FREAK LIKE THAT WOULD HAVE HAD ME CURSING, SWEATING, HEART POUNDING, EYES STINGING WITH TEARS OF ANGER. I actually know I'm getting more able to handle stressful situations like that without losing it, and that is more of a relief than you know.

Plus, as dude walked back to his car, this sweet little dog appeared next to mine. he looked up at me as if to say, "hey, sorry about that asshole." I had to open the door to pet that sweet thing. he looked back at the asshole with a look of disgust ( I imagine) and walked away. It was kind of funny....

Seriously, if someone drove like that (speeding up when I'm overtaking them, going significantly more than 10 mph over the limit to do so), I'd think they're a bad driver - probably enoug hto make it worth keeping well away from them on the road. ie you we're both speeding, he more so. He was passing you, using the correct (fast) lane. Then you speeded up, which prevented him passing you. This means you must have gone faster than his 65 mph.

Again, you must have gone faster than his 65 mph to do this. You have now overtaken him using the slow lane, at more than 10 mph above the speed limit.

You now claim "he was trying not to let me (pass)". But you were the one who speeded up. You said that wouldn't have been slowing him down. How can you square that with your claim that he wouldn't let you overtake him on the inside?

I like good driving, that's all. I'm saying that you shouldn't be surprised to be pulled over for driving like that.

i was not doing any more than what the car ahead of me did. But THEY had a tag with that county's name on it. I was a forinner.

When you said 'fast' and 'slow' lane, I assumed there were only two lanes in your direction of travel. How did the kids tailgating you get past both you and him? I thought they were behind both of you through all of this - just too close behind you for your comfort at the start of it. Do you mean that both you and the kids behind you overtook him on the inside, and then they overtook you on the outside, you slowed back down to 60, and then as the cop caught up with you you speeded up again?

In that case, yes, the kids were driving badly too. Still, you should have slowed down enough (to 55? 50?) to be able to drop in behind him in the fast lane, and overtake the truck after he did. It seems to me you overtook him twice on the inside, at more than 10mph above the speed limit.

and yes, had I known the car was driven by an asshole, that's what i would have done. Since he let the other kids pass and he was SPEEDING HIMSELF, I didn't think my turning on a bit more speed would hurt anything. People drive like maniacs down this road ALL the time.

because that's better driving. Also, I wouldn't recommend speeding up with the guys behind you tailgating - they would try to overtake you soon (after all, the fast lane was moving faster, which is what they want - they'll prefer it there), and then your problem would be over. Just going at 70mph yourself, to get far enough ahead of the investigator in the fast lane doing 65 that the kids can pull out in front of him, won't make you safer.

32. another experience in Tennessee

A female relative of mine (older than you) was chased by an "unmarked" car which then put on the flashing lights. She did not stop for this car. We've had too many people posing as cops, who pull over women and rape them. (It happens in my parish in Louisiana too, at least 4 times that I know of.) My relative drove to a police station. The driver of the unmarked car did turn out to be a cop, and he did try to charge her with "fleeing the scene."

The judge ruled that my relative had acted correctly.

I do not believe small females of any age should be stopping for unmarked vehicles just because they put a bubble gum machine on top. Go to the nearest police station. Hash out the problem there, in front of witnesses. Even if you get a ticket or a court date, the judge is going to rule for you if you have good reason for your action.

My relative had this occur in EAST Tennessee not middle Tennessee but I believe it is the proper advice for anywhere in the south.

I have been stopped by more than my share of MARKED cars seeking to harass me, but I have been lucky (knock on wood) and find that "a soft answer turns away wrath."

Yes, you need to be cautious of any male in a position of power who thinks his word is more to be believed than yours. I absolutely agree. White males in my experience are way more guilty of this than others. However, plenty of other white males are good people. You just have to do what you have to do to protect your safety while on the road. Never make gestures that may be misinterpreted or set off a whackjob. I had a whackjob point a gun at my car. Why? I have no idea. I think he just saw a blonde and wanted to show off.

Be careful out there. I've lived in the south my whole life, and I know you do get hassled by trucks, cops, etc. if you are a petite woman driver, just do what you have to do to be safe. If that means keeping your mouth shut and your thoughts to yourself, do it. Your satisfaction is that they will be frustrated when they can't get you agitated.

I was driving from my second job a few years ago, it was around 11:00pm and I was caught speeding, maybe 15 miles over the speed limit. The cop coming from the opposite direction, clocked me and I saw him in my rear view mirror make a u turn. And I thought, oh shit...is he turning for me?:-) And sure enough, the flashing lights came on (I was mad at myself for getting caught). So I stopped and the white male cop got out and asked for my license. And he asked me do I know what the speed limit is. I said, I don't know 45? He said, no it's 30. And so I apologized and said I had just left work. He asked me where I worked, I told him at the Gallup Poll company down the street. He said, well I'll let you off this time, just make sure you watch your speed. And I thanked him wholeheartedly. He smiled back and me and said have a good night...just then I noticed what a cute white dude (I wondered had I gestured the finger in mouth like bhghost, what he would have thought! LOL!). As he walked away, I noticed in my side rear view mirror that he had a nice butt too! So you see, there are some white cops that are just as pleasant and professional as they can be. around five years ago. I was doing 90 in a 70 going down I-75. i was late for my son's Christams band concert. Of course, everyone else was doing 90 as well, i just got picked out of the pack.

The officer was polite. i admitted i was speeding and apologized. it was a work zone, so I got a hefty fine. The cop was polite, professional and it was not a positive experience, but not a bad one either.

The cops in my neck of the woods are sweet and polite and so NOT fascist. They've helped me out and have never harassed me. I am normally polite and respectful to cops because they get paid shit and they perform under dangerous conditions.

As I said before, had he been an actual cop pulling me over, it would have been a different story. One like yours. Cops are not my enemies at all. But arrogant bullies ARE.

have many good white males as friends, but i know the feeling of reservation about unknown white males in public, especially in groups or with an obvious aire of arrogance. they are the one group i have the hardest time trusting because they have huge access to power and they often know it, and some have no problems abusing it. thankfully i live in the SF bay area, so the diversity mitigates some of their strength; the truly assholish ones walk about as if off-center, unsure. it helps make for a far more pleasant and open environment. when the power dynamics are unsure you find that those most prone to abuse it are more circumspect.

assholes come in all forms, but in america the dominant reins of power help bolster the arrogant white male archetype of asshole. just the way things are.

There are certainly exceptions, but overall, we SUCK.

Never, ever, trust a white man. We're out to cheat you, manipulate you, sell you crap you don't need, and if all else fails, we'll rape your and beat you and tell the judge you were asking for it. That wouldn't be abnormal for males in general, and if that were the sum of it, I'd probably chalk it up to the luck of the draw. But we also happen to be the ethnic/gender minority group with the most powerful politicians, CEOs, military commanders, investment bankers, priests and stockbrokers. We're not just good at the lyingcheatingstealing thing, we've perfected the art. We've got this whole rigged Ponzi scheme of a culture that we're out to push on everyone else, and throw you in prison if you don't play along, or -- heaven forbid! -- try to compete on our level.

As a rule of thumb, you can assume every white male you associate with is the contextual equivalent of a used car salesman for whatever situation you happen to be in. Maybe you'll get lucky, but chances are pretty decent that if you trust one of us you'll end up with a top-dollar lemon.
