U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde to retire in 2006

By Maura Kelly Lannan

April 19, 2005 | Chicago -- Rep. Henry Hyde, the Illinois Republican who steered impeachment proceedings against President Clinton and sought government restrictions on abortion funding, said poor health convinced him to step down.

Hyde announced Monday, his 81st birthday, that he will retire when his term ends after the 2006 election. Hyde, who has served in Congress for three decades, said physical limitations from back surgery two years ago have made it "increasingly difficult to run around in the places you have to be a successful congressman."

"Father Time and Mother Nature both stalk every one of us, and they finally caught up with me," Hyde said in Tuesday's (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald.

He did not return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment, but told the Chicago Tribune that leaving Congress will be "the saddest day of my life."

2. His health limitations notwithstanding, I for one will not --
-- miss Henry "Sorry-Ass" Hyde in the Halls of Congress.

He tried to shove the Clinton impeachment through and despite express and firm admonition from Senate leaders that they would NOT support it, Hyde persisted.

He lost that battle big-time. I had regarded him as a distasteful ultra-conservative prior to the impeachment hearings and afterword, a sorry-ass excuse for a public servant.

Adios, Congressman Hyde, and good riddance.

3. I second everything you said.
It really disgusts me when I remember how the media tried to paint him as an "elder statesman" during that farce in the House.

4. Yes. Clinton was always too conseervative for me --
-- but he got to lookin' real good after Henry Hyde began smearing him.

And Hyde himself had had a mistress in times past. Good god what a hypocrite!

6. Prezackly.
No matter what happens on election night 2006, it will be a little easier to bear knowing Hyde is out on his ass, the rat bastid!

He chaps my hide!
