Everyone who has written in defense of Mrs. Schiavo's right to live has received e-mail blasts full of attacks that appear to have been dictated by the unstable and typed by the unhinged. On Democratic Underground they crowed about having "kicked the sh-- out of the fascists." On Tuesday James Carville's face was swept with a sneer so convulsive you could see his gums as he damned the Republicans trying to help Mrs. Schiavo. It would have seemed demonic if he weren't a buffoon.

3. Not me-I thought the whole thing was sad for everyone involved

I had mixed feelings-I don't like the idea of starving someone to death without a living will, but I also don't like a bunch of idiotic politicians cashing in on the issue, nor did I like the family's attempts to portray the husband as Scott Peterson.

No matter what happened, there was no happy ending in store for Terri Schiavo, unless one believes in an afterlife.

This is tantamount to calling all conservatives evil bigots because a few jerks refer to Arabs as towel-heads, African Americans as porch monkeys, and Chinese as chinks.

I bet there were a few idiots that were so relieved that this mess was over that they said some inappropriate things and I bet there were some shit heads that made stupid jokes about the ordeal. I know there were many times more people who empathized with a family's loss and respectfully wished these people relief from their continued suffering.

She's clearly misrepresenting the majority reaction to this incident. Most of DU along with the vast majority of America considered this a matter for Mr. Schiavo and Terri's parents. While not entirely analogous, almost everyone here can imagine an older relative that we love and respect wanting to die with the strength and dignity that they lived with. Making political gains with the religious right at the expense of families all over the country was offensive to a lot of people and it was good to see this defeated. The reaction to that defeat wasn't always in the best taste but don't condemn us all for that.

To jaded people like Peggy insults and stupid jokes elicit a more visceral reaction than kind words born of empathy to another human being's loss and suffering. Don't hate Peggy Noonan, pity her.
