Do we know what the vote breakdown for the pope was?
Usually we eventually learn what the internal machinations were and what the tallies were.

Has any of that emerged yet?

8. I don't think the Cardinals will risk excommunication.
Since it was just four votes and the favorite won, I figure that Ratzinger was very close on the first three ballots but that some Cardinals held back in order to extend the discussion and have some points addressed.

10. Maybe they aren't - but how JP II was elected is known
There were two other strong Italian candidates - Benelli and Siri and it looked like Siri would win, and came within a few votes, but then Wojtyla was suggested and he rose to 11 votes and then quickly amassed the necessary total.

I assume people do speak off the record eventually.
