He may be a conservative doctrinaire (sp?), and he may make unpopular decisions, but according to histories I've read, his father was anti-Nazi, and Ratzinger joined the HJ because it was REQUIRED BY LAW.

He was 16 or so when he deserted (death of Hitler or not - this was still punishable by death).

If you are a Catholic, get a grip and, if nothing else, give the guy a chance. Hell, it isn't as if most of us are following everything chapter and verse (pun intended) anyhow.

John Paul II was considered "conservative" (and please don't mistake "conservative" catholocism with conservative US politics - JPII did oppose the war and the massive desparities of wealth distribution - hardly Bushian), and he may have been behind the times in many ways, but did a lot to heal wounds with Jews, Muslims, etc.

I'm not saying he'll be great. I can't say I'm not disappointed. But I am going to give him a chance - and quite frankly, it won't effect my day-to-day living.

But can't we cool it with the Nazi stuff? This is exactly how this board makes it into the papers (negatively).
