34. I'm just wondering how they'll deal with prochoice
politicians or Democratic pols in general. Ratzinger is an ultra far right hardliner, and the increasingly harsh tone of papal pronouncements over the past year bespeak his authorship of many of them.

The only worse choice would have been that Nigerian nutcase who wanted to excommunicate Kerry for running as a Democrat.

It will be a Papal decree that any politician that supports reproductionve freedom be excommunicated.

Count on it.

24. Yeah that's weird....it does follow prophecy
The question is whether they intentionally picked him to fullfil it, in which case the catholic church is aiming for the end of the world soon....

http://www.catholic-pages.com/grabbag/malachy.asp

Here's what he said abotu this pope...

"Gloria olivæ"
The Benedictine order traditionally said this Pope would come from their order.

Benedict the 16th.

Freaky.

46. Could another interpretation be
this is the next to last pope? And that the "last pope" just means that, the last pope? The Catholic Church decides for some reason not to have popes anymore? (rather than the "end of the world" interpretation. Just asking - I'm a lapsed Protestant, so I'm talkin' out my ass!)

51. No I don't see how
it's the last pope listed in the 'prophecy' and it says

In persecutione extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oves in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis civitas septicollis diruetur, & Judex tremêdus judicabit populum suum. Finis.

(In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End.)

That seems pretty much 'Finis' to me. Though some are saying that this means that the next (and last) pope will be named Peter and that no other pope has been named peter. Thing is they're thinking like his POPE name will be peter. What if his middle name is Peter and he's originally from rome or something like that. Lots of ways you could fit that in.

But you find me another German, who served in Hitler youth, only to leave once Hitler offed himself. Then rose high enough in the Catholic church to be elected Pope in 2005. Good luck with your task!

44. Some significance of the name...
...well, not sure why he picked benedict (other than the fact that it's a treasonous name in my opinion), but the name sometimes reflects the future ideology of the pope. Had he picked John Paul III, it would signal that he wanted to continue the ways of the previous John Paul II. Stuff like that.

Not sure why he picked Benidict, but personally I have lost a ton of respect for the catholic church.

30. I'm Catholic and I Think This Sucks
A hardcore conservative who, since he basically was the rudder behind JPII's hard conservative turn, will keep the church away from too, too many basic reforms that absolutely MUST be done.

The only thing that gives me hope, and forgive me for saying so, is that he's 78 and picked a name from one of the shorter papal reigns in recent history, which tells me he's basically a short-term caretaker while the political infighting amongst the rest of the cardinals -- especially the third-worlders -- will be toiling.

A sad choice, but perhaps not a long one.

72. It's Malachy
and I'm creeped out. The Church has never denounced this particular prophecy which means something. That Ratzinger would choose the name Benedict is indicative that he if not the whole Heirarchy believes the prophecy to be true. WRT to the authenticity of the prophecy, it is debateable since malachi's prophecies were not "discovered" until four hundred years after the fact. Also debatable is the mention of "Olive's Glory" altogether. The Benedictines supposedly said that the last pope would come from their order, which Ratzinger does not.

This needs further study.

45. Thanks for cheering me up. Perhaps he will be so controversial around
the world their will be a backlash and the next Pope will be more Progressive. Boy am I a wishful thinker.

54. Sinister looking
Seriously, the guy gives me the creeps. Never puch much credence in things like the Anti-Christ, but if I did Ratzinger would be exactly how I picture him.

On occasion John Paul could look benign and friendly. Not so Ratzinger. Can't you just see the scheming and plotting little wheels turning inside his head?

Presenting oneself to receive Holy Communion should be a conscious decision, based on a reasoned judgement regarding one’s worthiness to do so, according to the Church’s objective criteria, asking such questions as: "Am I in full communion with the Catholic Church? Am I guilty of grave sin? ... The practice of indiscriminately presenting oneself to receive Holy Communion, merely as a consequence of being present at Mass, is an abuse that must be corrected

The Church teaches that abortion or euthanasia is a grave sin. ...

Oh, and I LOVE this next part:

Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia. For example, if a Catholic were to be at odds with the Holy Father on the application of capital punishment or on the decision to wage war, he would not for that reason be considered unworthy to present himself to receive Holy Communion ... There may be a legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not however with regard to abortion and euthanasia.

Regarding the grave sin of abortion or euthanasia, when a person’s formal cooperation becomes manifest (understood, in the case of a Catholic politician, as his consistently campaigning and voting for permissive abortion and euthanasia laws), his Pastor should meet with him, instructing him about the Church’s teaching, informing him that he is not to present himself for Holy Communion until he brings to an end the objective situation of sin, and warning him that he will otherwise be denied the Eucharist

Yes, the church's position is that going to war with Iraq and capital punishment is wrong (but we'll look the other way ... wink wink)

60. Why all the shock, people?
The Cardinals were NOT going to pick some reformist liberal. It was always going to be a conservative. They just went with the hardest hardliner they could find. The Church will continue to be what it has been for ther past 25 years, but with a less pleasant face. Its downward spiral will continue unabated.

66. He's a nazi, and a protector of pedophiles. Look for a revival of the
Inquisition.
