Pope Fatigue
I understand why the death of a Pope/choosing of a new Pope are news worthy events.

But as one of the world's 5 billion non-Catholics, for me, the Papal media orgy is reaching its saturation point.

I admit it, I have Pope fatigue.

Anyone else?

Besides, if it wasn't for this, it would be Michael Jackson, 24 hours a day.

6. Why?
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 11:30 AM by Callous Taoboys
Why is this so important. I am sick of religion, myself, and wish it would dry up.

15. Hope for no ultra-conservative.
The Pope affects political decisions, world-wide.

16. Pretend for a moment that we got a real reformer in there.
Wow, he could do a lot to affect the future of the world. The Church's policies directly affect quality of life and environment all over the world, mostly due to their anti-birth control policy. One little change and they could cause the birth rate to fall through the floor. that'd be a great thing for the planet.

Won't happen, though. but the converse is true, also, he has just as much impact for the other direction. People listen to the Pope.

19. I hear you. My fatigue has a lot to do with my job....
and I have heard the same points that you are making. I just think it is time we get on with the business of securing a brighter future for this planet, no matter whom people in funny hats pick to be the pope. That so much rides on the beliefs of one man seems a bit suicidal to me at this point. That black smoke, white smoke, chalkings on the bottoms of supper plates and all play a part in all of this just seems beyond ridiculous. Just my opinion.

fascinates me, all the rituals and whatnot.

7. Why yes, yes I'm pooped by the pope! But at least
there's more validity to this process imho that the all Schiavo/all the time hoopla we had to endure.

9. It'll be over soon
Once the new name has been announced, the story will go through today's cycle and that will be just about it.

After the new Pope has been announced, we'll be hearing his life story for the next two weeks.

17. Only as a secondary story
It's like the guy who does a stand up routine right after Robin Williams finishes his act.

13. I tuned it all out some time ago.
It is strange, though, how almost every news story now has to have some religious angle. I don't remember that being true in the good old days of, oh, three months ago. The timing of the papal transition is obviously a coincidence, but the saturation coverage of news with religious overtones is getting depressing.

And these aren't just items about a keen-eyed believer spotting the Virgin Mary in a biscuit.

Take a look at today's NY Times. Most stories on the front page (including all those above the fold in my edition) have a religious angle of some kind.
