Speaker blasts campus (liberal) bias.
Might have been linked already, I can't search to find out.

"Classrooms across the country lack political diversity, a Santa Clara University professor of economics said during a lecture at UNC on Monday night.

The College Republicans sponsored Daniel Klein’s talk on the ideology of faculty in the social sciences and humanities in hopes that students would come to believe their claims that the campus has a liberal bias."

"Republicans are being systematically eliminated from these institutions,” Klein said."

"Klein suggested using affirmative action to diversify academic departments. When professors apply for a job, they should check a political ideology box, he said.

Klein also suggested creating new partisan departments. Non-left faculty could come together on campus, create a department and hire more faculty members who share their political views."

1. Affirmative action for political ideology?
These people are horrifying.

2. Yeah, Conservatives really love social sciences & humanities.
Too much study, too much hard work & not enough money.

This is an ongoing campaign.

It's called the North Carolina State University economics department. Of course the College Republicans on NC State's campus are just as ineffectual as the UNC ones, considering more media showed up to a rally here in October than students AND they were giving out free pizza.

4. I acknowledge there is some liberal bias
But it's the Republicans fault for not wanting to become professors. Republicans can't stand the idea of not making much money, so they do other things and piss and moan when they discover all (most) professors are liberal.

5. There is a REASON

that liberals are prevalent in academia.

Basically they are saying "affirmative action for dumb people".

They might as well base it on an IQ test, with special consideration for those who score lowest. They'd get the same results.

"I am a Republican. A recent survey showed that I am several times more likely than others to hold fallacious and incorrect views on subjects such as the Iraq war, the president's popularity and the attitudes of the international community. I believe that I deserve special access to the world of academic teaching, because there is currently a clear bias in favour of people who actually know the facts."

6. Maybe
it's because conservatives (reactionaries) tend to be a bunch of close minded anti-intellectual thugs.

"Oh, and I affiliate myself with a group that regularly espouses hatred for intellectuals and academia. College is just crying out for people like me."

Generally, right-wingers and academia are like oil and water. There's no bias, it's just the natural order of things. It's the same reason why liberals aren't demanding equal access to the world of gun clubs, tractor pulls and pro wrestling - because they DON'T FUCKING WANT TO.

8. Affirmative action?
So conservatives area minority? Oh I forgot that they're Christian and being persecuted. If they want more conservative professors, encourage them to get PhDs and apply for the jobs. That simple. Since Republicians are more drawn to business for the money, they really should give up that goal and do work in the humanities. Oh wait, they'd have to use scholarship. Opinions rule, not facts. Read Ann Coulter.

9. Krugman had a great column on this
I think it was Krugman. He said Universities are for thinking about progressive ideas for heavens sake and mentioned there is a place for conservatives, the army. (He said it more gently).

I say, we'll make Universities more "equal" when they agree to make the armed forces more liberal.

10. If we're going to "integrate" the social sciences and humanities
based on ideology, it's only fair that we do the same in the business and law schools--those traditional bastions of conservative thought. But you never hear the wingnuts talking about that. In fact, there is no "liberals only" hiring standard, no check-box for political correctness--that's an idea only a wingnut could invent. That said, there is a real problem with bias in today's academy, but it's not about ideology per se--it's a gender/ethnicity thing.

11. Or maybe conservatives should just try to be more intellectual
This claim of bias on campuses is BS.

Bottom line: Conservatives aren't intersted in teaching. They are either not qualified (for liberal arts subject, because they don't care about humanities and such) or they are so money driven that they won't work as professors when they can get more in the private sector.

12. Of course college campuses are full of liberals!
College is where you go to expand your mind and learn about things!

You don't go to college to reaffirm your narrow mentality . . .

14. The problem is, conservatives don't want to be A voice in
academia, they want to be the ONLY voice in academia. They manage to feel victimized whenever they're faced with an alternative viewpoint.
