Just got a call from a recruiter
Interesting conversation.

Starts the conversation out nicely. "Oh what college are you going to?" I answer him. Asks me if I 'd like to join the army and I say "eh well it's not for me".

Immediately he starts this BS on me "Oh I guess you don't care about defending your country"

I then said "Oh well I'll tell you what when the army wants those of us who are gay you let me know"

He then says in a somewhat angry tone "What did you say? Oh I couldn't hear you. I'm gay, I'm happy that must be what you meant. I know lots of people who are happy"

I then say "Ok that's nice you have a nice day." Phone counted the call as 2 minutes long.

Doubt they'll be calling me again.

Hope I'm not on a list now. His tone strongly suggested he didn't like what I told him.

No...what I care about is NOT being a party to illegally invading someone else's country.

6. Uh huh
What does bombing the daylights out of people who never did us any harm, who can't fight back and who can't get away have to do with "defending our country"?

What a bunch of non sequitur hooey! I take it there's no intelligence quiz to be a recruiter.

4. And they wonder why recruiting's down?
Being an idiot on the phone certainly doesn't help the effort.

5. Defending MY country....?
Sure I am!

When THEY start coming over HERE, then I'll be defending MY country.
Otherwise, I'm attacking someone ELSE'S COUNTRY, and THEY'LL be defending THEIR COUNTRY (by trying to kill ME). I'm not going over THERE to fight, because IRAQ (or where-ever) is NOT MY COUNTRY. Sorry, but I just don't buy the "defending your country" line. We're not Iraqi, we're not Vietnamese, and we're not Iranian (or whatever other adventure * has in store for us).

7. I had a Veterans assoc. call the other day asking for money
I said that they should address their money problems to the Commander in Chief, the guy who is cutting their benefits. He agreed with me. I've given money to Veterans groups before, but I can't afford it any more.

8. Poor guy is desperate
If I read what you wrote right, he was trying to say that he thought (ha ha! Not really, but let us "pretend") your definition of gay was like the 40's, when it meant simply HAPPY. If you had said, well, I am gay, and I don't intend to hide it -- can I still join? I'll bet you he would have said YES, he would have scheduled you for an ASVAB and a physical, and he would have feigned TOTAL ignorance when you stated your orientation at the job assignment phase.

See, he just needs A BODY, ANY BODY in the pipeline to get his supervisor off his back. If the body fails somewhere along the way to enlist, at least he is buying himself a few weeks of time where the sups won't be beating on him. And the supervisor needs production from all of his station to get his or her bosses off, too.

It really is a "shit rolls downhill" job.

You may just have deployed THE move against the seduction of our kids, gay, straight or unsure.

Can I burn a candle at your altar : )

I was lucky. There was no fake war going on when my two sons were in the window. But, am aware that many of us are STILL in the crosshairs.

Beth

On edit: I'd really like to see the gay population of service-age guys just shooooooooooooooooot up.

These horrible bastards. Over my cold death body will they get one more body to pimp for Halliburton. Okay, rant over.

11. oohhh Arlo Guthrie would be so proud of you!!! i am too!! that's what
I tell my kids to say if a recruiter calls. Any group that wants my severly retarded daughter for a nuclear submarine should grow a brain. I pissed off a recruiter one year because I said he could not talk to her on the phone (she never learned to speak) and he yelled at me. And I am a retired military wife and military brat myself. People like that we call a damncivilian, even if they do wear a uniform.

13. Good to keep those conversations short.
Didja notice he made 2 wild assumptions in that short chat?

1). Not joining the Army implied not caring about defending the country. For all he knew at that point, you were saving yourself for the Navy.

2). You used an archaic definition of "gay".

Jumping to unfounded conclusions... wow.. what an excellent way to pitch a difficult, dangerous, and noble occupation.

15. Number 2
He knew what I meant. In fact, it sounded like he was almost going to start talking about don't ask don't tell, but instead switched over to the "I didn't hear you you must have meant..." line.

16. Ah, believing one thing but saying another. Another great tactic
known to most as lying.

This recruiter should be selling used cars, not military service contracts.

When these muthus try to seduce your kids, tell them, sorry, s/he's GAY.

And that will do two things.

One, the recruiter will back off.

And two, think about respecting GLBT folk.

They can't have it both ways unless we let them.

Beth
