All the conservative overtones of the church come from the sponsorship of the Roman empire.

The battle will be between Ratzinger, a man who has openly denounced secularism and would likely try to "take back" as much of Vatican II as possible. In the other corner are those who believe that Vatican II was incomplete. They want to convene Vatican III. And hopefully for the sake of sanity, they'll finally allow priests to marry so they can get out their sexual frustrations on their wife instead of alter boys.
