Remember when Clinton was President every day for the MSM was filled
with horror stories about the economy, health care, housing market, China, corruption, budget deficits ---eventhough the economy was booming, more people were buying homes and moving up, "customer service" was the order of the day in Federal executive agencies, "making government work better for people" was the theme of the administration, America was respected (though despised by our enemies)and Clinton enjoyed the highest popularity internationally than any other President since JFK and yet the MSM had little good to report?

Now that things really ARE bad, the economy is in the toilet, more and more people are losing their jobs, homes, and children, health care is worse than ever in costs and quality, and we are more hated than ever around the globe, the MSM can't seem to find anything bad to say about this administration or the state of our coutry. The news is all glitz and highly irrelavent. No substance unless it is reporting on Michael Jackson or the many abductions, molestations, sex offenders etc. You would think that nothing is wrong in this country except for things.

Our nation is sinking into the cesspool of history and the MSM shoveling the dirt on our heads. AND few seem to know or care.

2. True
I keep hearing from Yahoo:

"The economy will turn"

"Economists predict the economy will improve"

3. If you are falling into a pit, closing your eyes does not slow your fall
Just like people who believe in 'abiotic oil' -- belief in something does not make it so. Except when talking about the stock market.

4. the worse it gets -
The more fluff we see on MSM. Part of it is the old synergy concept, where MSNBC spends more time yakking about The Apprentice than reporting on Iraq and CNN pushes TW movies/music constantly. I think it's a product of greed and misguided priorities as well as deliberately not reporting the news in fear that support for their beloved GOP will drop.

5. There are very few TV newscasters or "journalists", as they like
to call themselves, who have the guts to stand up to the corporate media owners. There is a guy on MSNBC by the name of Keith Olbermann, CNN has Lou Dobbs and Comedy Central has Jon Stewart (though he is fake news). Those are the only people on television I watch anymore. They actually criticize the bush regime and make good jokes about bad repugs.

9. It all started in 1980 . . .
when the neocons started their assault on the media by labeling it liberal and setting up their own communication infrastructure. The RNC spent millions into building a slick communications center and learning how to bypass the major networks by sending out stories to the small-town media. Then with the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine, Rush and his ilk started their radio programs which were under the MSM's radar because no one listens to AM radio. Then, you pair Scaife and Murdoch with Newt in 1994, launch Fox news later in the 90s and your infrastructure is in place. Add in the Lewinsky scandal with its 24-hour coverage and the networks start noticing that these new cable channels are getting ratings and making money.

Meanwhile Rove is spending 1998 and 1999 seducing the MSM and W "wins" 2000 with nary a word from the MSM about the Florida voting irregularities. In fact, the networks take their cue from Fox News' directive that W won Florida. 9/11 happens and scares all the MSM because the planes nearly miss hitting the broadcast studios. As all the cable news networks found after 1991, war sells and so does patriotism. The Democratic Leadership caves in and W gets the longest press honeymoon ever for a President (while Clinton had the shortest).

Michael Powell loosens up the ownership rules in exchange for "fair coverage" of W and the messageless Democratic campaigns of 2002 and 2004 further enhances W's MSM as "fearless leader." Thus this where we are today. The country is falling apart and the MSM diverts our attention with invented scandals and fluff pieces. It's bread and circuses while the empire falls.

Regards to actual news, when Clinton was president, the only thing on your list that was reported negatively, IIRC, was Health Care. A little on the China corruption, that was for the election years.

Otherwise it was:

White House travel office
Vince Foster
White Water
FBI files
Don't ask, don't tell
Paula
Monica
Fundraising.

12. Media Control
Much of this is due to who controls the media. Although it was not talked much then and still is not talked about very much now many MSM news organizations are controlled by Republicans or people who are friendly to Republicans. I do believe Jack Welch was the head of NBC during the Clinton years. Welch is a big Bush supporter and it was reported by David Brock that during the 2000 election Welch was in the control room of NBC rooting for Bush to win the election. Also, CNN and MSNBC have either had many Republicans Republican friendly leadership. In additio, even though much of the leadership of the MSM is Republican friendly Republican will claim there is a liberal bias if stories about the economy are reported to often.

more people would stop buying plastic trinkets and shiny cars they cannot afford to pay for or operate..

Corporate media moguls own OTHER businesses, and they must also have ad revenue.. They simply cannot "hurt" sales.:(

It's all marketing when you come right down to it..It's not really about news anymore.. It's about "perception" of the news.. The perception that boosts sales..

During the Clinton era, lots of people really did have some money, so no amount of trashing HIM would dampen sales..It was just "fun to do".

15. I don't recall that
The economic stories were the tech boom and the budget surpluses and how the Internet was changing the world.

Of course, it was a scandal a day in the media with Bill and every story had legs. That was the nauseating part.

To me, it seemed like the story was, "Clinton's pretty good at running the country but, wow, is he a scumbag and that is what gets the ratings. So, now, for your entertainment, a hooker from Arkansas with a baby that looks like him....."
