By Waleed Ibrahim

MADAEN, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S.-led forces and Iraqi troops raided parts of the town of Madaen near Baghdad on Saturday in search of up to 150 Shi'ite hostages whom Sunni guerrillas have threatened to kill, a government minister said.

"The town is now under the control of Iraqi and multinational forces. ... They are raiding areas where it is suspected that hostages may be," Kassim Daoud, interim minister of state for national security, told Dubai-based al Arabiya TV.

Iraq's state-run al Iraqiya television said the guerrillas had threatened to kill the hostages within 24 hours, and a senior Shi'ite official in Baghdad said Iraqi and U.S.-led forces were expected to launch a major overnight rescue bid.

"The number of hostages is 150. They include women and children, according to police intelligence officials I have spoken with," said the official, asking not to be named. Earlier, the number of hostages had been put at up to 60.

3. Iraqi, US forces raid town to rescue hostages

Iraqi, US forces raid town to rescue hostages

US and Iraqi troops raided a central Iraqi town on Saturday to rescue dozens of Shiite hostages whom Sunni rebels have threatened to kill if other Shiites did not leave town, a TV report said.

Interim National Security Minister of State, Kassim Daoud, told Dubai-based al Arabiya television that Madain, the town near Baghdad, was now under the control of Iraqi and US-led multinational forces.

"They are raiding areas where it is suspected that hostages maybe," the minister said.

In an incident likely to heighten sectarian tension between the majority Shiites and the Sunnis, masked Sunni militants on Saturday held scores of Shiite residents hostage in Madain and threatened to kill them unless all Shiites left the town.

4. Sent to Rescue Shiite Hostages, Iraqi Troops Find None
Sent to Rescue Shiite Hostages, Iraqi Troops Find None
By ROBERT F. WORTH

Published: April 17, 2005

Iraqi soldiers on patrol in Madaen found people calmly going about their business.

AGHDAD, Iraq, April 17 - Anyone in Baghdad this morning could have been forgiven for thinking the country was on the verge of civil war.

Three Iraqi Army battalions had surrounded the town of Madaen, just south of the capital, where Sunni kidnappers were said to be threatening to kill hundreds of Shiite hostages unless all Shiites left the town. As the national assembly met, Iraq's top political figures warned of a grave sectarian crisis. Iraq's most revered Shiite cleric issued a plea for restraint. Even the outgoing prime minister released a statement decrying the "savage, filthy, and dirty atrocities" in Madaen.

But as the army battalions arrived in Madaen, they saw streets full of people calmly sipping tea in cafés and going about their business. There were no armed Sunni mobs, no cowering Shiite victims. After hours of careful searches, the soldiers assisted by air surveillance found no evidence of any kidnappings or refugees at all.

By this afternoon, Iraqi army officials were reporting that the crisis in Madaen, which had been narrated in a stream of breathless television reports and news agency stories, was nothing but a tissue of rumors and politically motivated accusations.
