Poll question: Charitable contributions poll
I've gathered that most of us here, when we are financially able, give charitable donations. Which would you say is the most accurate in terms of your giving?

1. Generally, I only contribute locally . . .
2/3 goes to two local animal organizations, & 1/3 goes to my local library. Education is our best hope, after all!

Last year was the first time ever I gave to politicians, 527s & the ACLU. I continue to keep my ACLU membership active, but since my husband got laid off (a week after the election!), I can no longer afford to give to political causes.

2. The folks who get my money:
Habitat for Humanity, because IMO they are one of the few faith-based chairities who actually make people's lives better.

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee: For their support of human rights, economic and environmental rights, and opposing torture.

Planned Parenthood: They saved my life with a free pap smear, so I give them as much as I can afford.

I also support my local museums (through "sustaining" memberships) and I give small amounts to my local Humane Society and ASPCA.

I give my political money directly to candidates that I feel are worthy of support.

3. charitable contributions
Previous recipients:

local Museum of Fine Arts
local library
OXFAM America
NPR

Now that NPR has gone to the dark side, I'll give their share to OXFAM.

7. check out Pacifica Radio
or Democracy now! www.democracynow.org

Our local Pacifica station has a radio stream: www.kpft.org

We do need independent media, and yeah, last year I stopped giving to my NPR affiliate too. (Of course, you're not going wrong with OXFAM either!)

5. People I know who are in need.
We know a lot of kids whose families can afford to do a lot for them so we try to help them out, paying for sports, equipment, driving them when they can't get rides...

6. I give mostly to my church.
The rest of my giving is honestly kind of dwarfed in comparison to the support I give my church and its affiliated charities, but other than that, in 2004, it was:

*my local Pacifica radio station
*some disease-research charities for which friends and family do races
*political donations, and
*DU, of course! :D

those last 2 aren't tax-deductible.
